808s and $kyBreak: Southside’s Newest Rookie Eulogizes His Connect On His New Single, Premiered by MISHKA
02.06.2015
Critical Praise for Martin $ky:
“Blending street tales with heavy bass and Travi$ Scott-esque influences, all of his songs beg to be thrown in the whip and blow out your windows.” – MISHKA
“$ky possesses an effortless ability to ride rhythms…His flow alone is enough to make $ky one to watch.” – Pigeons and Planes
“He’s getting better by the day. This kid is a force to be reckoned with.” – Fake Shore Drive
“Not only showcasing his wordplay and catchy hooks, $ky mans on the boards as well, proving he’s a true triple threat.” – DJBooth
The Song:
Martin $ky is definitely not of this world. On his newest single “Plug,” premiered by MISHKA, the Southside savant creates one of the most peculiar musical concoctions of 2015. Raised in Chicago, 20-year-old rapper/producer Martin $ky’s dizzying vocals sway through the dingy canals of clamoring 808 slaps and shape-shifting sonic droplets. “Plug” is the fourth single off Martin’s Everywhere But Here EP, releasing March 3.
Aesthetically, Martin fills the same audio space that druggy contemporaries like Travi$ Scott and Chance the Rapper have been exploring in the past few years. On “Plug” his Chicago drawl is smoothed over with autotune, providing a blunted feeling that meshes with the wonky nature of the beat. Martin floats effortlessly into the crevices of the soundscape, positioning himself as a musician unafraid to add weird textures to his repertoire.
In the beginning of the track Martin spits the line, “Made me an EP, It sound like an album. Luckily, Martin can back up the boast, dropping numerous singles in the past few months that deserve to be on an album. Fake Shore Drive stated that “Martin continues to elevate the sound of his production and on “Estate”…proves that he’s getting better by the day,” when featuring his single with Rockie Fresh. Pigeons & Planes counted his song “Reach” with Saba among the “staggering amount of quality” that is coming out of Chicago. Everywhere But Here was produced entirely by Martin $ky and will be released on March 3rd.
