The Song:
Putting the finishing touches on his album 13, which is slated to release in March ’15, Detroit rapper MAHD is ready to share a soulful loosie. Produced by fellow D native Nolan the Ninja, “Raw Shit” debuts via Okayplayer and highlights elements of the classic Motor City hip-hop sound with gentle guitar strums, windchimes, and dusty vinyl ambience accompanied by a snare-snapping drum beat. As for lyrics, they’re full of references to Hennessey, Spike Lee’s He Got Game, and being a king as MAHD revives raw rhymes in hip-hop.
MAHD is the quintessential Motor City native. His bars are blunt, forceful and perfectly convey the type of hustle it takes to be successful in the D. On “Raw Shit,” MAHD is striving to “bring the feel back,” as he nostalgically reminisces about times when rappers would make classics in their basements. Throughout the song MAHD calls out “fake thugs” and “weak rappers” who threaten the culture of Detroit rap.
MAHD has been representing his hometown to the fullest, garnering praise from 2Dopeboyz for his ability to create “a passionate painting of the city’s make-up and plea to its detractors.” With a resurgence of Detroit artists like Danny Brown, Dej Loaf and Big Sean making waves in the music industry, it’s nice to hear one of Detroit’s seasoned rookies confidently rapping about the gritty struggles of the Motor City.
