Critical Praise:
“Montreal MC Lou Phelps’s “What Time Is It?!” is an irresistible jam — the kind of song that demands a two-step.” – The FADER
“The Canadian rapper is representing where he’s from hard on the new project, which was exclusively produced by his Polaris prize-winning older brother Kaytranada.” – XXL
“A handful of singles then followed under his Lou Phelps moniker before last year’s standout debut, 001: Experiments, which fused the electronic experimentation of the artist glimpsed on Cause I Wanna with deeper influence from Madvillain, Slum Village, Jay Z, and Erik B & Rakim.” – XLR8R
The Announcement:
With a nimble flow ideal for taking on glitchy and off-kilter electronic production, Montreal’s Lou Phelps crafts creative club bangers. Following up the Juno Award nominated 001 / Experiments, Lou Phelps announces 002 / Love Me, his upcoming album. With Lou’s brother KAYTRANADA taking the helm behind the boards and assuming an executive producer role, 002 / Love Me is a sonically innovative hybrid of electro and rap, with Lou Phelps attacking the instrumentals with inventive rhythms and relatable lyrics. Featuring appearances from BadBadNotGood, Jahkoy, Planet Giza, Pony, and drum master, Karriem Riggins, 002 / Love Me releases on September 21st via Last Gang Records. Lou will deliver the new music live on stages across Canada through a fall tour, with stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto. See below for a complete list of dates.
To accompany the announcement of the album, Lou Phelps shares bouncy bar-laden track, “Miss Phatty.” Produced by The Celestics (KAYTRANADA & Lou Phelps) and with additional production from acclaimed jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD, “Miss Phatty” finds Lou seducing a woman over disorienting, staccato synth arpeggios and loping bass flashing a double-time flow as he spits clever come-ons: “I’m not the type to have a type/Cause if I had a type, I’d never have a girl/Cause you’re not the type I would bring on a date/So let me get that number, uh.” “Miss Phatty” follows “Come Inside“, the album’s Jazz Cartier-featuring first single that has been on heavy rotation since its drop in February, and the frenetic cut, “Want To (For The Youth)
“Miss Phatty encourages the kids to go to the stripclub and to fall in love with them,” Lou says of the sentiment behind the song. “002 / LOVE ME is me telling relatable love stories that I have lived/Imagined/fantasized about, it contains the good and bad and the ugly of a relationship.”
A longtime fixture of the Montreal arts scene, Lou Phelps is one of Canada’s foremost purveyors of club-rap bangers. Lou started making music in 2011 with his older brother Kevin, aka the Polaris Prize-winning producer KAYTRANADA, forming a future-rap group called The Celestics. Using the moniker Louie P, Lou developed a reputation for creating tasteful and danceable electro rap, releasing Supreme Laziness in 2014 and curating Cause I Wanna, an 80-minute DJ mix that featured tracks from innovative electronic artists like DJ Rashad, RP Boo, and Kyle Hall, showcasing his excellent taste and long list of influences. In 2017, Lou released 001: Experiments, his debut project which racked up over 1 million plays on SoundCloud, featured appearances from Bishop Nehru, Innanet James, KALLITECHNIS, and CJ Flemings, and earned a nomination from Canada’s Juno Awards for Rap Recording of the Year. Look out for more music from Lou in 2018, as the young rapper continues to evolve as an artist.
