With an entrancing croak of a voice that helps him stand apart from and above the crowd, ATL’s Lil Wop pushes trap music to its limits. Unleashing a demonic vocal performance, Lil Wop takes a stab at horrorcore with “Deathnote,” his latest single. Issuing death warrants above droning bells and subterranean bass, Lil Wop delivers his detractors a final warning, accompanied by sampled quotes from the classic horror film Child’s Play. Directed by Paul John of Midnight Cinema, the “Deathnote” video finds Wop presiding over a dinner party where the guests have been violently killed, rhyming from his whip and his throne, pondering who shall live and who shall die. Premiered by Complex, who raved “Layering ragged vocals over ominous production, Lil Wop’s ‘Deathnote’ is a song that feels like it should be playing on loop in hell. It sounds evil,” “Deathnote” is the latest single in the lead-up to Wopavelli 4, Wop’s upcoming mixtape.

Packed with eerie, mind-expanding beats from ChaseTheMoney, Nick Mira, DJ Ayo, and others, Wopavelli 4 finds the young rapper stretching the limits of his voice, crafting clipped and distorted bangers, enhanced by his signature vocal fray. Last week, the Gucci Mane co-signed artist shared the XXL-premiered video for “Hugh Hefner,” a hedonistic clip for a bite-sized banger from the upcoming project. With Lil Wop holding down the mixtape’s 16 tracks with no assistance from featured artists, Wopavelli 4 hits digital distributors on August 10th via 1017 Eskimo/Alamo.

The Background:

Every artist dreams of having a meaningful exchange with their inspiration. Lil Wop was sought out by his. For years, the energetic spitter was drawn to Gucci Mane’s honesty, fearlessness, and nimble delivery. Less than a year ago, the prolific and veteran hit-maker reached out to the Atlanta-based rapper with the Wopavelli mixtape series. “He was like, ‘I want to sign you; I don’t care what it takes,’” the younger artist recalls. When Big Guwop checked out the “Lost My Mind” video on Worldstar, he was one of the millions who were captivated. Lil Wop possesses an attitude and confidence in his blunt verses. On that viral hit, he compared himself to his idol in the opening lines. With his trademark gruff delivery, Wop seemed to already be living out a rockstar’s lifestyle, while never abandoning his Trap roots. “I was at a loss for words with the whole situation,” he recalls. He soon signed with 1017 Eskimo/Alamo Records. A year later, on August 10, Lil Wop will release Wopavelli 4, his biggest and most focused project.
