MP3: Krizz Kaliko – “Talk Up On It”
The Rapper Turned Singer Drops Bouncy RnB Track Ahead of Next Week’s Release of Go
03.31.2016
The Video:
In preparation for the April 8th release of his Pop/RnB opus Go, Strange Music consigliere Krizz Kaliko releases “Talk Up On It,” via the Strange Music SoundCloud. Though he is known mostly as a rapper, “Talk Up On It” is a bouncy and flirtatious RnB track which equally recalls Chic, Cee-Lo Green Is The Soul Machine, early ’00s Timbaland, and Michael Jackson’s Bad. Produced by Michael Seven Summers, “Talk Up On It” represents the lighter side of Go, proving that Krizz Kaliko’s dancefloor jams are just as good as the darker explorations of his psyche.
As Krizz Kaliko explains the genesis of “Talk Up On It,” “I was on tour and walking through a mall with my wife when I saw an extraordinarily attractive woman walk by. This made me think about the strategy I’ve always taken to approaching a woman that I was interested in. What I wrote in the verses of the song are exactly the way I think when approaching a woman in any situation with the intention of seducing her: I’m going to flirt a little bit and then back off. All the while, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, ‘I’m not a cute guy, but I’m going to get her anyway.’ Michael “Seven” Summers and I produced the beat together. I had the idea for the beat and I gave it to him over the phone while I was on tour. I brought the label owner’s assistant, Korey Lloyd, in to play lead guitar. He works in the office but he’s a mean guitar player. Now the whole world will get to hear how I talk up on it.”
Earlier this week, VIBE debuted the video for Krizz Kaliko’s “Stop The World,” a powerful ballad dedicated to those struggling with mental illness. Previously, Krizz Kaliko released “Behave,” a single featuring Tech N9ne that explores the complex nature of spousal fidelity via Complex. Born with vitiligo, a skin condition that turns parts of your skin white, Krizz was teased incessantly but knew he had a special gift of creating music. Adopting the name for the spotted and parti-colored cat known as the Calico, Krizz Kaliko embraced what made him different and started the journey that would save his life: he started making music. His sixth studio album, Go, is Krizz’ first ever Pop/RnB project and is slated to release on April 8th via Strange Music.
