Critical Praise
“Orlando artist Kim has shown a talent for weaving through different flows as well as for coasting between melodies and tightly wound rap bars on past cuts like ‘Ali’ and ‘Let Me Pray.'” – Noisey
The Song:
An Orlando rapper with silky smooth vocals and nimble flows, Kim is one of the best under-the-radar artists in the rap-n-b game. Probing deep within his psyche, Kim reveals his vulnerability on “Remnants,” his latest single. Alternately spitting and rapping over the atmospheric instrumental from “FEEL.,” a highlight from Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. album, Kim shows off detailed bars as he opens up about his life on the Mass Appeal-premiered track, including about his fraught relationship with his dad, who committed suicide: “Should I take a bullet and just off myself/Mark my words I won’t miss my mark/Like father, like son, I’ve been thinking like a martyr/and how I could become one, thoughts in the dungeon.” Best known for his collaborations with Houston legend Trae Tha Truth, Kim shares his collaborator’s passion for social change, as he provides his take on the violence in Charlottesville toward the end of his freestyle. An affecting and addictive follow-up to Seeking Forever, Kim’s latest project, “Remnants” is available to stream on SoundCloud.
“A lot of songs from my Seeking Forever EP are single-worthy,” explains Kim, “but I’m big on substance and now I want to release real fine-tuned lyric-based song. It’s like I’m spilling what remains. I started rapping not too long ago, my father killed himself and that’s what propelled me. The rap thing, it’s whatever, it’s not my world, I’m more a fan of it. I intended to drop this a month ago. It’s about what happened in Virginia. It’s more of a venting freestyle.”
Describing himself as the “Ghetto Evanescence” on his song “Block 4,” a Noisey-premiered collaboration with Baltimore spitter King Los, Kim started rapping in response to his father’s suicide. Constantly wrestling with his demons, Kim sought clarity on Seeking Forever, his latest EP, released in March 2017, which has racked up over 200k streams on SoundCloud. Though Kim is a young artist, he has already earned some major co-signs from Trae Tha Truth and T.I. On Trae’s recent album Tha Truth Pt. 3, Kim showed his range, lending an inspiring verse to the laid-back anthem “Alleviation,” flashing his pipes on the soul-sampling throwback “Break Out The Function,” and improvising in the background on “Feel So Lost.” Stay tuned for more from Kim as he continues to make a name for himself in the music industry.
