Following the release of his album The Wake Up, Jahzel and his Black Key Collective label group embark on a press run to New York City in their third and latest webisode. The 6-part series, presented by HipHopDX, follows the Chicago rapper’s crew from budgeting, team-building, scheduling, and traveling—just to name a few of the tasks that come into play while managing an independent record label. In episode 3 we follow the big personalities as they hit the NYC streets for a series of meetings and interviews. Jahzel and his team never fail to pack the Chicago mentality into their bags, carrying the hustle along with them as they navigate the music biz. Tracking them on day one of a two-day trip, the crew pushes their strongest game forward as Jahzel freestyles with a beatboxer for DJBooth TV’s RapBox feature before hosting a dinner with some key music industry contacts.
Jahzel has been building momentum with a strong campaign of releases that have led up to his new album, The Wake Up, which premiered via HotNewHipHop. OkayPlayer premiered the visual for his single, “Faithful,” recognizing Jahzel as a “Chi-town representative” who delivers rapid-fire lines professing his love for the city. Previously, Jahzel dropped a visual for “Who Is You?!” via 2DopeBoyz, showing the struggles of inner city youth through stories of personal experience. With the ball rolling early in the year, Jahzel and his team are confident about what’s in store for 2015. In his interview with AllHipHop, Jahzel spoke on anticipation for his upcoming EP and his current state as a musical artist, expressing the drive that’s keeping his career on the move. “I’m not waiting on nobody no more,” Jahzel states, “I don’t care what anybody thinks; I have to go get it.”

Only a true Chicagoan can fully understand the city’s hustle mentality – simultaneously holding down multiple jobs while going to school, taking care of our families, and being active in our communities, all while pursuing our dreams and goals. It’s the Chicago way. Chicago-born musician Jahzel, eats, sleeps, and breaths that mentality: “We [Chicagoans} are hustlers in general; we get it done,” he says proudly. “I am telling the story about Chicago that hasn’t been told – that along with the bad things that are happening, there are plenty of positive things going on. This is the real story of Chicago and I think people can relate to it.” Jahzel has always been a proud Chicagoan, and his most recent project, The Wake Up, is an ode to the city he holds dear.
