The Webisode Series:
Managing an independent record label isn’t easy. Team building, budgeting, scheduling, and traveling are just a few of the tasks that come into play while working with a sense of urgency to make ends meet. In a 6-part webisode series presented by HipHopDX, Chicago rapper Jahzel and his Black Key Collective label group navigate within the music industry, as they encounter and resolve the many challenges faced when prepping the release of the burgeoning MC’s forthcoming debut album, The Wake Up. In the first episode, the BKC team scrambles to get quality cover art made, which proves to be a challenge after the initial submission fails to meet their expectations. With The Wake Up releasing January 19th via The Black Key Collective, Jahzel has presented a strong campaign of videos and singles. HotNewHipHop delivered the most recent single, “Faithful,”which paints a vision of the MC’s upbringing and how he’ll never forget where he’s from. Prior to that, Jahzel dropped a visual for “Who Is You?!,” which premiered via 2DopeBoyz. The video showcases the people who have always been there for Jahzel, as he is flanked by his crew and spits lines like “We are not the same, you do not retain/ My type of diesel, my type of loyal,” evoking themes of loyalty similar to “Faithful.” “Who Is You?!” followed the release of the album’s third single, “John Stockton / Radio Raheem,” which debuted on XXL. The track explores the struggles of growing up in Chicago and uses the metaphor of John Stockton to promote the message that Jahzel will “assist where he can.”

Jahzel Background:

Only a true Chicagoan can fully understand the city’s hustle mentality – simultaneously holding down multiple jobs while going to school, taking care of our families, and being active in our communities, all while pursuing our dreams and goals. It’s the Chicago way. Chicago-born musician Jahzel, eats, sleeps, and breaths that mentality: “We [Chicagoans} are hustlers in general; we get it done,” he says proudly. “I am telling the story about Chicago that hasn’t been told – that along with the bad things that are happening, there are plenty of positive things going on. This is the real story of Chicago and I think people can relate to it.” Jahzel has always been a proud Chicagoan, and his most recent project, The Wake Up, is an ode to the city he holds dear.
