“Skippa Da Flippa [is] the most lyrically talented unknown to come from the trap.”HipHopDX

“I don’t understand how somebody could not be a fan.”GreatFrank’sPlace

The very first song rapper Flippa ever made resulted in a video with more than 7 million streams. In 2014, the longtime Migos affiliate took his close friends’ advice and put his experiences, charisma, and style to music. It has led to a series of celebrated videos, albums, and smash singles with Rich The Kid, Lil Yachty, and Lil Durk. Now, Flippa and his Havin Ent imprint partnered with RBC Records and BMG for his biggest release to date, Up To Something.

Originally from Palm Beach, Florida, the rapper once known as Skippa Da Flippa moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia in his early teens. “Quavo and Takeoff were the first people that I talked to when I came out here,” he says of the area northeast of the ATL. A top prospect at tailback, Flip was just as interested in running in the streets as on the field. “We were all just high as hell,” he recalls. “If it was hot, we was all full force, front line.” Back then, rapping was not in the teen’s plan. Although his football coach never told him that athletic scholarships were on the table, he was eventually expelled from school for behavior. That transition only brought him deeper into hustling. Soon after, a car chase and weapon charge landed Flip behind bars.

Upon exiting lockup, Migos was tearing up the independent scene. Quavo brought his right-hand man to Gucci Mane as well as the would-be team at Quality Control. “The first thing Gucci said to me is ‘Stay out of jail. It’s no place for a Black man.’” Instead of returning to the trap, Flippa became a fixture at Migos’ studio and shows, part of the Y.R.N. movement. Rather than just watch their confidant become entourage, the squad encouraged Flip’ to try his hand at rapping in 2014. “The first song I recorded was ‘Safe House.’ Then I did ‘Wells Fargo,’” he recalls. Those songs exploded, garnering interest from the burgeoning QC label founded by Pierre “Pee” Thomas and Kevin “Coach K” Lee. Flippa dropped his I’m Havin tape and instantly drew four figures for solo shows. “I do not write anything. It comes off the top,” he says of his songs, which include Quavo collab “Swervin’” a track with more than 5 million Spotify streams and YouTube views, respectively. “I do it in the booth. I’m not memorizing nothing until til’ after the song.” Just as in the street, the stakes are high for the passionate rapper. “I’m just so hungry. This is all I got. So I’m gonna go hard, and I’m not gonna stop.”

As the label priorities shifted, Flip pushed on, feeding the streets. “I played it cool and took care of it like man,” he admits. His Flippa McFadden mixtape series presented an artist that could not be contained. Now independent, Up To Something puts the ball back in Flippa’s hands. “I haven’t dropped a project in over a year. I’m comin’ to take the spot back, and I’m going nowhere but to the top,” he says of the 13 tracks produced by his team. While his video single “Don’t Play Me” follows Flip’s patience and frustrations in the past, “Dance” heats up the strip clubs with another anthem in a trusted catalog of melodic creations.

While being longtime friends with Migos is an attractive backstory, Flippa stands in no one’s shadow. Up To Something is purely an in-house presentation from Havin’. It has no guests and is supported by a team of producers he has sought out. This commanding rapper delivers his brightest and boldest album—with plenty of songs to flip, and nothing to skip.
