Rapper Demrick Announces Collect Call Album, Due June 24th
Fresh Off World Tour With Logic and Dizzy Wright, The California Emcee Explores His Past in Wistful New Track “Back in the Daze,” Premiered by HotNewHipHop
Demrick is a fixture in the Southern California Hip-Hop scene. Formerly known as Young De, the Spokane, Washington native counts SoCal heavy hitters like Xzibit, Kurupt and Cypress Hill as mentors and major collaborators. After learning the breaks of the game from these legends and assisting them with finding a younger audience in the new decade, Demrick steps out on his own with his second studio album, Collect Calls, hitting stores June 24th. The album features multiple productions from prolific West Coast hitmaker Scoop Deville (Kendrick Lamar‘s “The Recipe” & “Poetic Justice,” Snoop Dogg‘s “I Wanna Rock”), as well as guest appearances from California stalwarts Casey Veggies and Lil Debbie. “I really represent the theory that ‘anything is possible,’” Demrick explains. “This is my best and most honest work to date.”
Born in Spokane to a single mother on welfare, the biracial Demrick found peace in Hip-Hop. After forming the Tangled Thoughts rap collective in high school, “Young De” linked up with Kurupt for several collaborations. Eventually, Demrick found his way into the studio with B-Real of Cypress Hill, earning several features on B-Real’s debut Smoke ‘N Mirrors. ““I was going to B’s studio for about six months and he never even knew I rapped,” Dem’ recalls. “One day I got the chance to actually rap for him, and he was really impressed by me.” In 2013, Demrick teamed up with B-Real and Xzibit to form the Serial Killers, releasing two projects and gracing the stages of Rock The Bells and Lollapalooza. In 2015, Demrick released his first solo album, Losing Focus, on Madchild’s Battle Axe Records, produced entirely byCali Cleve and featuring contributions from Logic, Dizzy Wright and others.
Today, the veteran prepares for Collect Call by ringing up new single “Back in the Daze,” premiered byHotNewHipHop. The song finds Demrick reflecting on his fateful journey from Spokane, WA, to New York City in pursuit of a rap career, “with a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter and jelly and nothing else.” Demrick calls the single, featuring infectious chipmunk soul from producer GMB, his “most personal record ever.” Explains Demrick, “I actually called my mother on the phone and used part of our conversation on the record. The crazy thing is we haven’t really ever spoken about that story until the day of this actual conversation on the record. I was sitting with my boy Ace, and we were just talking about some of by wild stories when I was young. Halfway through the conversation, we just decided to put it on record since its such an outlandish story. I felt people needed to hear it not only for the value of the story, but for the significance it has in who I became. It truly was the turning point of my life going down the right path rather than becoming a follower of others.” Collect Call officially releases on June 24th.
