Commanding the respect of the Bay Area streets with his calm-voiced authority, Cookie Money was born to be a gangsta. When he was young, he was forced into a provider role for his family when his father went to prison. With few options, Cookie Money took to the streets, using an array of illicit means to make sure his family had food every night. Earlier this year, Cookie’s father died, stirring up a series of conflicting emotions that he poured into “Pops Died Last Week,” his latest video. In the video, Cookie rhymes at the base of a gorgeous Los Angeles church, wondering who he can trust now that his father has passed and worrying about the effect it will have on his family and his young daughter. “Pops Died Last Week” is a highlight from Cookie World 2.5, Cookie’s latest mixtape.

Premiered in October by Dirty Glove Bastard CW 2.5 is a slap-heavy, emotionally honest album, with Cookie relating stories about his hustling prowess, his violent past, and the tragic inevitability of losing people close to him. Born and raised in Oakland, Cookie Money is no stranger to life on the streets. When he was a teenager, Cookie lost Anthony Butler, his best friend, to gun violence–the first of many senseless deaths that came to shape his worldview. Cookie Money started rapping at the suggestion of DJ Mustard, who gave Cookie several of his beats and booked him 90 days in the studio for him to learn how to rap. Since that fateful meeting with DJ Mustard, Cookie has worked with the likes of YG, E-40, Young Dolph, Boosie Badazz, Icewear Vezzo, and many others.
