Video: Superboy Cheque – “Loco” (Prod. by Tempoe)
The Genre-Blending Hitmaker Behind Rising Song “Zoom” Returns With a Striking Video for a Razor EP Highlight
“The talent jumps out of this young man…He also has the ‘young forever’ tenor vocals that suits Afro-pop, trapsoul, rap, post-destructionist emo and trap. This EP is a winner from all angles and intents, and all its songs are impressive with high replay value.” – Pulse Nigeria
Superboy Cheque blends the style and soul of Afrobeats with the rhythmic delivery and attitude of rap music. In the brand new video for “Loco,” Cheque radiates the star quality that’s made him one of Nigeria’s most promising talents. Switching between English and Yoruba as he applies his smooth tenor to a lush afrobeats instrumental from Tempoe, Cheque uses an entrancing combination of rhythmic repeated sounds and emotional vocal runs to describe the way his newfound love makes him feel: “You be like medicine when I be feeling sick,” says Cheque. In the video, directed with colorful flair by TG Omori, a stylish Cheque takes his bae to an exotic location, as he romances her with the help of a trio of flashy dancers.
“The video was inspired by the understanding that love is a general language and doesn’t have borders,” says Cheque, “which is highlighted in the video with some dancers wearing costumes inspired by Middle Eastern wear. The world can be better if we ‘always let love lead.'”
“Loco” is a highlight from the Razor EP, which put Cheque on a path to breakout status upon its release this summer. Razor is home to “Zoom,” a hip-hop influenced track that evolved into one of Nigeria’s biggest hits of 2020. With a video that shows Cheque soaring through Lagos in a flying Benz, “Zoom” is a trap ballad that evokes the emotional street music of Lil Durk and Roddy Ricch. Racking up over 20 million streams across platforms, “Zoom” reached number two on Nigeria’s all-genre Apple Music chart, only trailing Afrobeats superstar Davido who retweeted Cheque and offered to hop on the song’s remix. “Zoom” also reached #2 on the worldwide Audiomack chart (10 million+ total streams), peaked at #4 on Ghana’s Apple Music chart, #3 on Sound City Africa’s Top 20 chart, and #3 on Nigeria’s Shazam chart. Cheque recently earned a “New Artist Spotlight” from Apple Music Nigeria, who named Cheque “New Artist of the Month” for November 2020.
The 25-year-old artist also made waves with the video for “Satisfied,” a Certibeats and Masterkraft-produced Afrobeats banger about being a “bad boy in a good mood every day,” Cheque weaves between woodblock percussion and gently-plucked guitar, proving he can hang with any of West Africa’s vocal giants.
Signed to Penthauze, a label founded by respected Nigerian rapper Phyno, Cheque is currently preparing videos for more Razor EP highlights. The artist has spent the past weeks vocal and active in Nigeria’s #EndSARS movement against police brutality, posting in support on socials and even taking to the streets himself in protest. More than ready to become Nigeria’s next crossover star, Cheque is only scratching the surface of his immense talents. Stay tuned for much more from the young artist, who is currently preparing a star-studded remix to “Zoom.”
