Chase Shakur Embodies The Joy of Intimacy In New Single, “2OFUS”

Critical Praise:

“Shakur defies genre expectations and delivers a unique sound that synthesizes the various elements of hip-hop, funk, soul, pop, and R&B into forward-thinking music deeply rooted in Black culture.” – Office Magazine

“I wholeheartedly believe Chase Shakur will take over the modern R&B genre.” – Lyrical Lemonade

“Atlanta’s Chase Shakur is redefining R&B” – HITS Magazine

“Chase Shakur is one of the most exciting singing prospects of late. His relatable lyrics mix well with his production choices. After the success of artists like Childish Gambino, Summer Walker, and more, it’s safe to say Atlanta has another R&B star on the way.” – Rap-Up

The Single:

A musical omnivore with high-end vocal talent, Chase Shakur constantly seeks to expand the sound of R&B. He continues to sharpen his unique brand of experimental R&B in his latest track “2OFUS.” The orchestral single uses melodic keys, the twinkling of xylophones, and Chase’s sultry vocals to dive headfirst into emotional and physical intimacy with a lover. The track opens with the rising star describing the shared late-night phone calls that last until the sun comes up, pillow talk at each other’s places, and the safety of sharing personal stories with someone you trust. The second half of the single explores the way that emotional connection can add to physical electricity between the two lovers. The addition of alt-rock-inspired percussions creates a head-bobbing beat that stays stuck in the mind’s rotation.

2OFUS” is a quintessential addition to Chase Shakur’s collection of R&B hits and will appear on WONDERLOVE, his upcoming LP. The Atlanta native started his rise in 2022, after dropping out of school to focus on music and getting kicked out of his house in the process. He quickly found success with his 2022 debut project, It’ll Be Fine, home to cult hits like “too far close” (38 million Spotify streams) and “i don’t want to fall in love, it’s too late now” (35.3 million Spotify streams), which drew the attention of Def Jam Recordings. In 2023, Chase capitalized on that album’s success by releasing the it’s not you, it’s me EP, and its companion, it’s not you, it’s me…it’s love, earning him praise from outlets like BillboardOffice MagazineLyrical Lemonade, and more.

This year has been a busy one for Chase Shakur, filled with new singles and high-profile performances. In March, just before performing at Rolling Stone’s Future Of Music Showcase at SXSW, Chase shared “THE STUNT-MAN PACK,” a double single featuring “YOLANDA,” an airy, uptempo, and wistful club anthem, and the off-kilter slow jam “OPTIONS.” Over the summer, Chase toured the globe with The Kid LAROI on the Australian artist’s “The First Time Tour.” Most recently, Chase teamed up with fellow ATLien Destin Laurel for the skittering, sexy drill-inspired single “PASSENGER SEAT PRINCESS.”

Stay tuned for more from Chase Shakur, including WONDERLOVE, coming soon via Def Jam Recordings.

The Background:

Chase Shakur’s vision is both simple and unendingly ambitious. To put it plainly, the Atlanta-born artist wants to change the sound of R&B. On his new project, “it’s not you, it’s me”, the talented singer-songwriter transcends genre signifiers to conjure up a unique world. Armed with a deep grasp of the South’s musical history—hip-hop, funk, soul, pop, and R&B—Shakur synthesizes these various elements into a forward-thinking sound deeply rooted in Black culture.

Shakur’s decision to drop out of college to pursue music full-time led to him being kicked out of is childhood home. He couch-surfed and spent days in various studios, resting between songwriting sessions. This era helped him forge collaborative bonds with other producers and songwriters, some of whom went on to figure in his Forever N September collective, a group of musicians who helped craft the sound of “it’s not you, it’s me”. The resulting project feels diaristic and transcendent. “it’s not you, it’s me” is a reflection of Chase Shakur’s career thus far, particularly his mental toughness and ability to keep pushing forward all in pursuit of that one goal: To change the shape of music.
