“Yung Bans warbles his raps at a low pitch, largely using lyrics as a conduits for vocal patterns…Bans provides a natural evolution of the sound being offered up by his contemporaries. He muffles his flows, letting his immutable melodies seep into blurry beats.” – Pitchfork
“Atlanta’s Yung Bans releases some of the best music on SoundCloud” – Pitchfork
“With a full steam of momentum, Yung Bans’ road to become a household name is paved” – HYPEBEAST
Revered in the Atlanta scene for his melodic mastery, Yung Bans took some time away from music to care for his family. Returning with a batch of new tunes and the mentality to reclaim his spot atop the game, Bans shares Vol. 6, his new album and his first since 2019. Continuing the self-titled mixtape series that put Bans on the map in the late 2010s, the new project finds Bans in a confident, yet reflective mood, counting his riches even as he licks wounds suffered during his initial rise: recent single “Luv 4 Granted” interrogates his mental state, while the wistful “Sometimes” reverberates with uncertainty about whether fame and fortune leads to happiness. Elsewhere, Bans dips into his reservoir of flexes, daring the world to take him on in the lead single “Who Want Smoke?,” embracing a fast-living lifestyle in “Rockstar Lyfe,” and finding peace in isolation in the bouncy “Mr. Solo Dolo.”
These two sides of Bans’s personality come together over a series of spritely, hard-hitting instrumentals, which rely heavily on catchy guitar melodies and stadium-sized 808s. The 25-year-old artist united with many of his favorite producers, including TM88, Nick Mira, StupidXool,, Danny Wolf, Bobby Raps, and Bugz Ronin, who provide him with an updated version of the ATL SoundCloud aesthetic he helped perfect. Bans also recruited an array of features that mix the old and new: he duets with trap up-and-comer Highway on the burbling “Stick In A Gown,” but also chops it up with old peers in the energetic “Free Trap Free Ralo,” featuring Doe Boy and a now-free Ralo. Illustrating how much the game has changed over the past half-decade, Bans includes collaborations with YNW Melly, who has been in jail since 2019, and R5 Homixide, the promising Atlanta artist who passed away in 2021, among the tape’s 15 tracks. An accomplished re-entry into the world of trap music, Bans’s Vol. 6 is available on all platforms via 1Of1/AWAL.
Honing an effortlessly addictive and inventive flavor of trap music, the Atlanta native burst into public consciousness as a teenager in 2018, releasing three self-titled EPs, collaborating with the likes of Future, Juice WRLD, XXXTentacion, and Lil Durk, and earning positive mentions in Pitchfork, The FADER, HYPEBEAST, and more. Bans was an early muse for Cole Bennett, who directed several of his music videos, including “Ridin” (34 million views) and “Lonely” (21 million views).
Still only 25-years-old, Yung Bans made a stir when he announced his return earlier this month. Bans performed his first concert in years when he appeared at Lyrical Lemonade’s 10 Year Anniversary show in Chicago, a testament to the strong relationship he still has with Cole, bringing out Jasiah to perform their collaboration “Shenanigans.” Shortly afterward, Bans teased “Who Wants Smoke,” his first new single since 2021, generating social media buzz and encouraging comments on IG from Cole Bennett, trap music peers like Doe Boy, Ralo, and Reese LaFlare, plus younger artists influenced by his work, like DC The Don and Bear1Boss.
Bans’s triumphant return after multiple years, Vol. 6 picks up where Bans left off, and continues his run as one of his city’s most forward thinking emcees.
