âTigers In Cairo take the best parts of six-string slanging 90s Alt, solidly stoic low-end flex & emotionally pleading Jawbreaker-esque clarity while placing those well-worn signifiers under one modern PowerPunkPostPop umbrella.â – Screaming For Years
âIntroducing Tigers In Cairo: a new force in post-punk. âŠthis track is the perfect soundtrack for hot summer days spent hanging around in your friend’s backyard or long drives up and down the coast.â – Amplified SD
âTigers In Cairo pick up where the heroes of 90s indie and shoegaze left off, taking those sounds, combining them with the punk of their hometown of San Diego, and kicking them into overdrive.â – Drop The SpotlightÂ
Putting their own unique spin on the sounds of the 90s rock heroes who inspired them, San Diegoâs Tigers In Cairo are steadily rising in their cityâs music scene and beyond. Today, they keep up the momentum from their debut last month with âWavy Eyes,â a new single. The track finds lead vocalist David Martin embracing humility, looking back on past mistakes with a newfound sense of clarity: âI should have known / Wish Iâd left you home / I should have shown up.â The bandâs intricate guitar leads and thrashing drums provide a powerful sonic backdrop for the emotionally-charged lyrics, with guitarist Gavin Rhodes closing out the single with a dynamic guitar solo.
David explains the meaning behind the track: âWriting about true embarrassment and humility is difficult and humbling. This is the gist of what âWavy Eyesâ is about. [Previous to Tigers] I was feeling too comfortable with a live performance. Feeling too comfortable was my downfall by allowing myself too many drinks and I ruined what was supposed to be a great opportunity and experience. Itâs still difficult to talk about and I still feel embarrassed, and singing this song is to keep it top of mind to keep myself in check.âÂ
âWavy Eyesâ follows up last monthâs âAlways Adored,â Tigers In Cairoâs first single as a group. The band, composed of drummer Matt Yansch, vocalist David Martin, bassist Dennis Smith, and guitarists Gavin Rhodes and Paul Skura, is based in San Diego, California. Formed as a result of Rhodesâ New Years resolution to start a band in his new hometown, the group came together via a Craigslist ad and local networking. Taking shape one puzzle piece at a time, Tigers In Cairo eventually solidified their lineup and band name. Inspired by the Cure’s âFire In Cairoâ and aspiring to embody the ferocity of an apex predator, the band began recording music. Combining Yanschâs sharp sense of arrangement, with Martinâs lyrics, and Rhodesâ and Smithâs riffs and progressions, Tigers In Cairo have landed on a unique sound that they are continuing to refine.
With much more music on the way, Tigers In Cairo is the local rock supergroup San Diego has been waiting for. Stay tuned for more from the band soon.
