“Montreal MC Lou Phelps’s “What Time Is It?!” is an irresistible jam — the kind of song that demands a two-step.” – The FADER
“The Canadian rapper is representing where he’s from hard on the new project, which was exclusively produced by his Polaris prize-winning older brother Kaytranada.” – XXL
“A handful of singles then followed under his Lou Phelps moniker before last year’s standout debut, 001: Experiments, which fused the electronic experimentation of the artist glimpsed on Cause I Wanna with deeper influence from Madvillain, Slum Village, Jay Z, and Erik B & Rakim.” – XLR8R
Montreal rapper Lou Phelps specializes in shifting his flow to best fit skittering instrumentals created by some of the best beatmakers in his city’s underground scene. Teaming up with the most prominent producer to emerge from the MTL underground, his brother KAYTRANADA, Lou Phelps defiantly charts his own path on the whirring “Want To (For The Youth).” In the video, Phelps filters his existence through stylish lo-fi effects, driving his SUVs through a backdrop evocative of ’80s PSAs, dancing in the snow, and warping in a laundromat, all as his corporeal form transistions in and out of the frame. Premiered by Complex, “Want To” is a prime example of Phelps’ distinct blend of electronic and rap, flashing a doubletime flow to deliver a worthwhile message to the world’s youth. “Want To” is Phelps’ second video of 2018, following the trippy clip for the candy-colored disco-funk single “Come Inside,” premiered in March by Billboard.
“It’s a song for the youth,” explains Lou Phelps, “to encourage them to do what they want to. The song raps about materialistic stuff, so in the video i become invisible at certain times, leaving the material things floating like the gold chain or the purple jackets.”
A longtime fixture of the Montreal arts scene, Lou Phelps is one of Canada’s foremost purveyors of club-rap bangers. Lou started making music in 2011 with his older brother Kevin, aka the Polaris Prize-winning producer KAYTRANADA, forming a future-rap group called The Celestics. Using the moniker Louie P, Lou developed a reputation for creating tasteful and danceable electro rap, releasing Supreme Laziness in 2014 and curating Cause I Wanna, an 80-minute DJ mix that featured tracks from innovative electronic artists like DJ Rashad, RP Boo, and Kyle Hall, showcasing his excellent taste and long list of influences. In 2017, Lou released 001: Experiments, his debut project which racked up over 1 million plays on SoundCloud, featured appearances from Bishop Nehru, Innanet James, KALLITECHNIS, and CJ Flemings, and earned a nomination from Canada’s Juno Awards for Rap Recording of the Year. Look out for more music from Lou in 2018, as the young rapper continues to evolve as an artist.
