Leaving home can be hard, but for those of us that are adventurous and daring enough to leave the nest the journey can be rewarding. For 21-year-old Taylor Gang rapper J.R. Donato, his North Chicago roots will remain his foundation, regardless of where music leads him. “You can catch me in the hood, even if I make it out,” boasts the chorus of the Fast Money & Freedom single, “Make It Count.” Producers Sledgren and RMB Justize provide the production as hollow chimes pan from side-to-side and hi-hats rattle around knocking bass drums. “J.R. Donato succeeds on sheer menacing energy,” noted Mass Appeal in their premiere post, adding “it’s a flexer song to dance to without thinking.” The “Make It Count” video follows the 2DopeBoyz-debuted remix of Wiz Khalifa‘s “Outsiders.”

At the end of September, J.R. Donato released his Fast Money & Freedom project, which carried a hazy, hypnotic soundscape produced in-full by Sledgren. He followed the release with a series of singles, including “I Suppose,” which found J.R. Donato couch-surfing through the Chi, and “Life So Sweet,” which debuted via HipHopDX. Additionally, the GoodMusicAllDay-premiered “Mad At Me” showcased J.R. Donato embracing the opportunities that he’s encountered in his nearly ten year rap career, which included a regional high school tour as a teen with local legend Twista before signing with Taylor Gang Ent. “I sound like myself. These days that’s not easy,” J.R. Donato explained in an interview with AllHipHop. “The line for originality is thin, but I think I can walk that line fine. Also all my music has a message in it so it’s always relatable, and that’s what the game needs.”

JR Donato Background:

J.R. Donato’s music can be summed up into three words; conceptual, vivid and thorough. His image, outlook on life and positivity that he brings to the hiphop community is a breathe of fresh air. His passion manifested itself early in the form of songwriting. “I always wrote about things I had been through or seen,” J.R. says. “I still do. Every song is another piece of my life and story.” Before J.R. reached his teenage years, he was already penning lyrics for himself and others. By the time he was 13, Young J.R. had a regional hit single “500 Degrees,” with a live performance presence that was unheard of for a kid who just left his teens. That led to other tracks like “Money On My Mind” and “We Be Rydin,” creating a sizeable buzz for young entertainer. He was popping up on mixtapes and performing at clubs he was too young to even attend.
