“The Toronto-based group of Fiji and Ca$tro Guapo is gearing up for their new project Atlanada 2, which, if it’s anything like its 2016 predecessor, will make for some great music to blare out of car stereos whether driving down Queen Street or through hazy Atlanta summer’s day.” – Noisey
“You best believe CMDWN are coming up…If you’ve always dreamed of a NAV-cum-Lil Uzi Vert-cum-SAFE vision, CMDWN are here to satisfy all your needs. The sound of the Toronto dream duo, comprised of rapper Castro Guapo and vocalist Fiji, bridges almost every genre. On each track expect a melting pot of hip hop, and pop/RnB with a sprinkle of synth-y electronic — every one a surefire banger in its own right. It’s an exciting amalgam coming from an exciting place at a truly exciting time for hip hop, and believe me CMDWN is a group it’s time to get excited about. ” – PAPER
“CMDWN feel like perfect avatars of Toronto’s fashion-obsessed nightlife culture: their music is rowdy and packed with references to brands like Ksubi and Alexander McQueen. Their songs avoid pathos and navel-gazing, instead offering something close to the platonic ideal of late-night hedonism in the city.” – NOW Toronto
Fusing regions and genres with their tasteful soundscapes, Toronto’s FIJI and Atlanta’s Ca$tro Guapo aim to change the game as members of CMDWN Collective. Delivering an iconoclastic mission statement over a low-key and drippy instrumental, CMDWN shares “Hit & Run.” Gliding over syncopated drums and charming marimbas, Ca$tro boasts about his as FIJI delivers a defiant chorus in an infectious monotone: “I like rap, I like rock/They can’t keep me in a box.” Completing the puzzle is a verse from rising ATL eccentric Lil Wop, who croaks an off-kilter 16 in the anchor spot. Premiered by NOISEY, “Hit & Run” follows the similarly skeletal “Strong,” released in June, another example of the collective’s mastery of negative space.
Explains Ca$tro Guapo, “Here is a little taste of what’s to come on Atlanada 2. Shout out to Lil Wop for hopping on this and shoutout to everyone who’s been riding with us since day 1.”
“Hit & Run” and “Strong” are the first glimpses of Atlanada 2, the upcoming album by CMDWN. Combining the gauzy R&B stylings of Toronto with the attitude and sonics of Atlanta’s trap scene, Atlanada 2 is a stylish synthesis of CMDWN’s appeal, providing a soundtrack for the turn-up or the waning hours of a night out. Click here to watch an ominous trailer for Atlanada 2, distributed by eOne Canada, featuring appearances from Chief Keef, Lil Wop, Key!, Nessly, Killy, Pressa, and Lil Berete, and production from WondaGurl, 1k, VillaBeatz, Dnny Phntm, and more
Formed in 2014 after a store-closing party in Toronto, CMDWN makes music for the club and the delirious hours after the drugs wear off. Comprised of singer FIJI and rapper Ca$tro Guapo, CMDWN made inroads in the Canadian rap scene with their memorable melodies and southern rap influences. Last year, CMDWN released Castro vs. FIJI EP, which emphasized the different, yet complementary styles of the collective’s two artists. In the past year, the duo struck gold with collaborations, earning a guest spot from Nessly on their single “Die In Supreme,” and teaming with Lil Yachty for the party jam “The Way She Move.” Praised by Highsnobiety, PAPER Mag, Toronto NOW, and Noisey, among others, CMDWN Collective are an excellent bet to break out stateside. Look out for much more music from the crew in 2018.
