Ludacris and Nicki Minaj Revive a Flex-Heavy Anthem, Rusted Root Get an EDM Remix, and We Get “deja vu” Seeing Olivia Rodrigo Back on the Charts

The News:

TikTok is a haven for nostalgia. This week, users paid homage to a hip-hop legend gone too soon, added new context to songs from the 1990s and early 2010s, and helped propel a retro-leaning soul track to #1 on the Billboard charts. Check below to see how TikTok brings nostalgic joy:

• With the recent passing of hip-hop legend DMX, the TikTok community honored his life by cranking up one of his most iconic songs. The hard-hitting “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” has been the sound of choice for creators, with most of the 70.7K+ video creations using the sound arriving in the past week. The sound inspired gymnastics-themed DMX tributes and soundtracked the beaming toddler confidence after a haircut. The sound even brought out a familiar Fast & Furious face to show off some cool, Ruff Ryders-inspired Formula D motorsport drifting tricks.
• Bruno Mars is no stranger to the Billboard charts, and this time he’s brought Anderson .Paak along with him. With the push of over 545K TikTok creations and undeniable talent from both artists, the Silk Sonic dubbed duo has crooned their way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their silky smooth hit “Leave the Door Open.” While most creators have enjoyed lip syncing to the song to mimic everyday scenarios, a dance involving the track is on the verge of virality. Look for “Leave the Door Open” to soar even further as the trend picks up steam worldwide.
• Originally recorded as a 1994 folk rock track by Rusted Root, Vibe Street’s electronic remix of “Send Me On My Way” has been making its rounds on TikTok this week. For many, the original upbeat track is one that evokes feelings of childhood nostalgia. The electronic remix took the song to a new level on TikTok and has been especially popular with videos showcasing cute animals and even cuter babies. The “Send Me On My Way” sound has generated over 372.4K creations and has seen everything from birds singing childhood tunes and dogs making stuffed animal friends (or enemies) to babies excitedly taking their first steps.
• It’s been a while since Valentine’s Day but it’s never too late to show love. Ludacris and Nicki Minaj’s 2010 banger “My Chick Bad” (253.8K+ creations) has recently been the anthem for the TikTok community to flex their partners and, for some D1 athletes, an opportunity to flex themselves. Other TikTok creators have even taken to the sound to flaunt their custom, decked-out trucks or to show that even though self love is important, it’s okay to not take yourself too seriously.
• Breakout star Olivia Rodrigo saw massive success on TIkTok with her smash hit “drivers license” (1.9M creations), and now she has a new release that TikTok helped propel to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. “deja vu” was released April 1st and debuted on the charts at #8. Just a couple days after its release, the official sound has been used over 212K times and a fun trend is beginning to emerge. Users are lip syncing to the song while using the inverted filter to show family resemblance, their face symmetry, or simply just for fun with friends. With creators finding endless ways to use the sound, Olivia Rodrigo has a new TikTok hit on her hands.
