Video: Maxo Kream – “Talkin In Screw” ft. That Mexican OT

Big Persona and the Lonestar Luchador Join Forces to Pay Tribute to DJ Screw in a Pugilistic Texas Rap Team-Up For the Ages, Released on Maxo’s Birthday

Critical Praise:

Every line arrives like deftly paced camerawork, as Maxo constructs a scene worthy of a Scorcese film.” – Rolling Stone

“The secret to keeping every song so effortless and flowing, regardless of subject matter, is in the phrasing. He can boil something as complicated as friends betraying each other down to a simple and clever line.” – Pitchfork

“Maxo Kream is one of the smartest, funniest, rawest rappers out of Houston (or anywhere), a gifted storyteller with a drawl that draws you in and an eye for detail that holds your attention” – Stereogum

“His best songs are stuffed with so many specific names and places that the listener has no choice but to believe what they’re hearing as true. It’s rare for me to believe anything a rapper says these days, but with Maxo it’s different. His vulnerability and clear-sighted perspective when recounting traumatic events leads me to believe Maxo is a reliable narrator” – Passion of the Weiss

“Houston rapper Maxo Kream has been dropping singles lately, and his conversational, melodic style remains addictive each time.” – BrooklynVegan

“His discography deals in-depth with the family struggle. It’s also a reminder for all of us to listen to the whole story. Otherwise, you inevitably miss a crucial piece of the incredibly complex puzzle of his life: poverty, gang culture, his complicated relationship with his parents as an immigrant son.” – NPR

The Video:

A master storyteller who has succeeded for over a decade in the game on his own terms, Maxo Kream is a proud torchbearer for the Texas rap tradition. Today, the Houston heavy-hitter celebrates his birthday by sharing Talkin In Screw,” a new single and music video featuring fellow Texan That Mexican OT. Produced by Nick Grand, the new song is Houston to its core, populated by screeching synths and thumping 808s, inviting Maxo and OT to apply their fastest flows as they flex in double-time and dare any smack-talkers to meet them face-to-face. In the final minute of the song, “Talkin In Screw” slows to a syrupy pace, putting a spotlight on Maxo’s lyrics and paying tribute to the late Houston innovator DJ Screw.

In the video, directed by Texas-based shooter DGreen Filmz, Maxo rocks a purple Screwed Up Click t-shirt, while OT dresses like the hip-hop cowboy he is, as the two rappers stunt at the Screwed Up Records store in Houston and show off their purple candy-painted, swanged-out convertible. “Talkin In Screw” is the second collaboration between Maxo Kream and That Mexican OT, following last year’s “Opp Or 2” from OT’s Lonestar Luchador album.

“Talkin In Screw” continues a productive 2024 for Maxo Kream, who is reclaiming his spot as one of the premier storytellers in the rap game. He kicked off 2024 with Bang The Bus, an ethereal, stutter-stepping single produced by Surf Gang’s Evilgiane, covered in Stereogum, Rap Radar, Hits DD, and more. Maxo used his music to process a loss in his family, paying tribute to his hero, his father Emekwanem Ibemakanam Ogugua Biosah Sr., aka Brandon Banks, who passed away earlier this year, in the single and music video for No Then You a H*e, covered in Billboard, HotNewHipHop, Brooklyn Vegan, and more. Maxo is hard at work on an upcoming project, due later this year, featuring both singles and diving deep into Maxo’s personal history.

Maxo’s upcoming album is the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2021 album Weight Of The World, which earned critical acclaim from Pitchfork, NPR, Complex, and many others. The album featured collaborations with heavy-hitters including Tyler, The Creator, A$AP Rocky, Don Toliver, and Freddie Gibbs, and was expanded with 2022’s Weight Of The World (Deluxe), adding features from Benny The Butcher, Anderson .Paak, Babyface Ray, and more. Maxo spent 2023 releasing more fiery collaborations, including “Bonecrusher” ft. Key Glock and “Whatchamacallit” ft. Luh Tyler, and working on his health: the rapper recently shared that he lost more than 75 pounds and is in better shape than ever before.

Stay tuned for much more from Maxo Kream, as he continues to perfect his personas and honor his late father in 2024.

The Background

Street life and the struggle to make ends meet, as well as the multitude of effects they have on family relations, inform the frank narratives of rapper Maxo Kream. The native Texan went from local to national phenomenon during the front half of the 2010s. He first charted with Punken (2018), a full-length that led to a deal with major label RCA, which issued subsequent albums Brandon Banks (2019) and the indicatively titled Weight of the World (2021). Maxo Kream (Emekwane Ogugua Biosah, Jr.) was born in Houston and raised in nearby Alief, where he got involved with gangs and supported himself with activity that led to a criminal record. He was drawn to recording music in high school, inspired by his everyday life, and first gained attention outside his region with a highly personalized revamp of Kendrick Lamar’s “Rigamortis.” Retro Card and Quicc Strikes, Maxo’s first two mixtapes, were self-released respectively in 2012 and 2013. He then connected with the TSO label for 2015’s #Maxo187, 2016’s The Persona Tape, and 2018’s Punken. The last volume in this run was Maxo’s first recording to register with Billboard, most notably on the Independent Albums and Heatseekers charts. The rapper consequently signed high-profile management and recording contracts with Roc Nation and RCA and made his major-label debut in 2019 with Brandon Banks. That album, featuring contributions from Travis Scott and Megan Thee Stallion, entered the Billboard 200 at number 68. In 2021, he issued Weight of the World, a deeply ruminative set led by the Tyler, The Creator collaboration “Big Persona.” 2022 brought the solo cut “Jigga Dame,” which appeared on a deluxe edition of Weight of the World. Maxo is currently working hard on a new project, due later in 2024.
