The Song:

Gifted with plainspoken wit and an affinity for wordplay, 23-year-old Caleborate is one of hip-hop’s most promising young voices. Premiered by HotNewHipHop, “Good Great” is a soul-sampling, celebratory track with thumping bass about achieving success in the music industry after overcoming hardship. “Good Great” expands upon many of the sounds and themes heavily featured in 1993, Caleborate’s most recent album, focusing on how people change when someone achieves success. Featuring appearances bySylvan LaCue and Pell, as well as production from P-Lo, Mikos Da Gawd, HBK’s Kuya Beats, Cal-A, and Julia Lewis, 1993 combines nostalgia for the 23-year-old rapper’s childhood and explores Caleborate’s unique generational point-of-view through complementary beats and great storytelling.

Caleborate had a busy summer ’16, sharing quality tracks from1993, including the VIBE-premiered single “Options,” a soulful summer jam, which you can find on Spotify’s Most Necessary playlist, and loose tracks like last month’s FADER-premiered “Made Me,” which reflects on Caleb’s struggles and motivations. The follow-up to 2015’s Hella Good, which received critical praise from Pigeons & Planes,The Source, and SF Weekly, which named it the Best Hip-Hop Album of the Bay Area for 2015, 1993received rapturous critical acclaim upon release, with Complex raving, “Caleborate delivers his rhymes with the confidence of a vet” and EARMILK calling the album “the soundtrack to your 20’s.” Says Caleborate, “Although the title of this project may seem a bit exclusive to certain generations, it is meant to be felt by everyone who has been, currently is, or will be a twenty-something.” 1993 is available to stream and download now.

Caleborate Background:

A Berkeley bred student of hip-hop and all around eclectic artist, Caleborate has been renowned as one of the games most promising emcees. With lyrics that represent the unique struggles of the average 20-something, and stanzas about the day to day grind as a collegiate youth, he covers topics far and wide and is anything but shallow. After being awarded the “Best Hip Hop Album of The Bay Area” in 2015 by SF Weekly, Caleborate is poised to sit cross-legged atop the hip-hop genre someday.
