Video: MBNel – “Ransom

The Filipino-American Emcee Plays the Rap Game with Elevated Stakes in His Raw New Music Video

Critical Praise:

“He just has this way of telling his truthful, eye-opening story in such a manner that is not only compelling but it’s told in such a way that it’s like he’s reliving every moment as he makes his way throughout each narrative. Not only this, but he is able to incorporate some of that trademark West Coast bounce into his music so that way it doesn’t sound like he’s just preaching to you, as it sounds with so many other artists in the industry.” –Ā Lyrical Lemonade

“MBNel wasn’t built to lose.”Ā XXL

The Video:

MBNel’sĀ music expertly conveys the pain of street living and the perseverance required to make it out with body and soul in tact. Taking stock of his standing in his hometown of Stockton, CA, MBNel sharesĀ Ransom,” a heartfelt and hard-hitting new video single. Skating atop portentous pianos with plaintive melody and snapping flows (“Put some money up, I bet my singin’ ass get another one popped,” quips Nel), the Filipino-American rapper delivers a series of indefatigable flexes and mini-narratives that add up to create a vivid picture of his life: “Money ain’ the problem it’s the fake love/They gon’ dap me up, but when I leave is when they say sum,” Nel laments. In the video, directed byĀ Skiimob, Nel rocks Palm Angels and pulls up to the block in his Benz Truck, showing love to the city that made him what he is today. “Ransom” follows in the wake ofĀ As You Should,” a seductive, sung-through banger.

Born and raised in Stockton, a city in Central Cali with a booming rap scene, MBNel built a reputation on the West Coast for his combination of hummable melodies and harrowing trench tales. The 25-year-old artist has a loyal following who respond to his naked authenticity, elevating 2021 songs likeĀ Opulent,”Ā Shooting Stars,”Ā andĀ Manifested”Ā past the 2 million stream milestone. In the wake of his successful 2021 projectĀ No Hard Feelings,Ā Nel is challenging himself artistically, pushing the boundaries of his sound as he continues to express his truth. TheĀ Muddy Boyz/EMPIREĀ artist plans a series of impactful singles, plus a forthcoming EP, to flaunt the depth of his songwriting and storytelling prowess.

ā€œI’m not afraid to delve deeper than what’s on the surface,ā€ explains MBNel. ā€œI make music like a journal.ā€

The Background:

“I’m not afraid to delve deeper than what’s on the surface,ā€ explains MBNel. ā€œI make music like a journal.ā€ From South Stockton’s 8th Street, Nel’s accounts of life can be grim. He achieved millions of streams through rapping about navigating the codes of the streets in the Northern California city, his Filipino-American upbringing, and trying to make a way through music. However, the 25-year-old is challenging himself and his sound. Songs like the 2021’s ā€œOpulent,ā€ ā€œShooting Stars,ā€ and ā€œManifestedā€ have been close to the heart while demonstrating depth and range that transcends rap music. Those three tracks—each at 2 million streams or better—have showcased Nel’s melodic delivery, honest songwriting, and ability to uplift audiences around the globe. ā€œI’ve been experimenting with a whole bunch of different sounds,ā€ he shares as he continues to amplify and expand a self-made career with a series of dynamic singles in the upcoming months.
