Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more.
TikTok is home to a diverse and passionate community of Latin music fans, who help shine a spotlight on the vast spectrum of sounds that originate in Latin America. For many years, Reggaeton dominated Latin music charts in the United States, but while reggaeton is still exceedingly popular on the platformâKarol G & Shakiraâs âTQGâ was the top trending Latin song on TikTok last weekâTikTok has helped raise the commercial fortunes for traditional and regional Latin genres that donât get as much radio airplay.Â
Leading the charge is Regional Mexican musicâa catch-all term that encompasses genres including norteño, corridos, and bandaâwhich evolved from a non-factor to a mainstay on the Billboard charts, thanks in part to regional songsâ popularity on TikTok. In 2021, âBotella Tras Botellaâ (344k video creations) by Christian Nodal & Gera.MX, became the first regional Mexican hit to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and âSoy Ăl Unicoâ by Yahritza y Su Esencia, which first made waves as an original sound on TikTok, debuted at #20 on the Hot 100.
This year, regional Mexican music is having a massive moment on TikTok, with 23-year-old artist Peso Pluma leading the charge. With over 1.6 million followers on TikTok, Peso Pluma is responsible for some of the yearâs biggest hits, including the Natanael Cano collaboration âPRCâ (261k video creations), which rocketed to popularity behind a dance that makes use of the songâs distinctive trumpet hook, and âElla Baila Sola,â a collaboration with Mexican group Eslabon Armado that generated over 470k video creations. Just this week, Peso is making waves with âLa Bebe,â his collaboration with Yng Lvcas, which generated over 40k creations and landed at #2 on TikTokâs top trending songs of the past week. Thanks in part to TikTok, Peso Pluma has 5 different hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including âPRCâ (#64), âLa Bebeâ (#26), and âElla Baila Sola,â which just became the highest-charting regional Mexican songs in chart history at #17.
