The Video:

Big Jade burst out of Beaumont with blunt force bars and a lyrical honesty that helped her stand out in the Texas scene. Switching up her style for a sultry new anthem, Big Jade shares “Soulmate,” her new video single. Produced by DJ Chose, “Soulmate” is no romantic gesture, but a definitive statement of where things stand: “You ain’t my soulmate, you my f*ckmate,” intones Jade. The new song departs from Jade’s usual style, showing a melodic side of the emcee that she’s never revealed before.

The song features a characteristically smooth guest appearance from Fredo Bang, who is happy to oblige with Jade’s short-term needs. In the video, directed by ShotByJolo, the two Southern rappers ditching their current flings to be with each other, culminating in a steamy scene in Fredo’s red Chevy Caprice. “Soulmate” is the follow-up to “Gangsta Activity,” Jade’s first single of 2023.

“Soulmate” is the latest salvo in Jade’s rise to prominence, which started in 2020. Last year, the Alamo Records signee released a trio of Texas-fried jams: “Pesos,” a collaboration with Galveston’s Peso Peso, the thumping “Lower,” her thumping twerk anthem, and “Eat,” an expansive collaboration with Houston legend Z-Ro. Jade experienced viral success late in the year when “Rodeo,” her collaboration with Dallas rapper Lah Pat (102k TikTok creations). Jade is currently hard at work on her follow-up to Pressure, Jade’s critically acclaimed new album, which earned praise from Stereogum and Pitchfork.

“I got the attention of the right people by being genuinely myself,” explains rapper Big Jade.

From Beaumont, Texas, the 26-year-old spitter made a name for herself by releasing a series of videos online that showcased her rapping ability. However, her Beatking-produced “RPM” showed a woman juggling rap dreams while doing hair. She was unashamed, unapologetic, and uncut. “It was real. That’s how I grind and get money,” admits Jade. “I’m not out here getting rap money yet; I’m popular on Instagram. Rappers are scared to say they’re doing something else just to make it. Where are you getting the money to invest in yourself and make it happen? Because that’s where it all starts for all of us.” Newly signed to Alamo Records, Big Jade took those steps to get noticed, and now she hopes to put herself and her city on the map.
