With an uncanny sense of melody and hard-hitting flows, Vallejo’s Benny can turn any Bay Area beat into a slapper. Reflecting on his come-up grind, Benny shares “You Don’t Know,” his latest video. Switching effortlessly between rhythm and melody over a plaintive, piano-led instrumental, Benny dwells on his past and current hardships and expresses hope for the future: “Life’s hard and I struggle just to think straight/But I know that I’m a dog like a beef frank/Always up working early so I sleep late/I’m always out and on my grind so I can eat great.” In the video, Benny broods in black and white, kicks it with his bros in a laundromat, and dances in front of a blank background as pictures of his loved ones flash on-screen as he mentions them in their lyrics. Premiered by Dirty-Glove Bastard, “You Don’t Know” is the latest single from Different, Benny’s upcoming project, following the HYPEBEAST-premiered player’s anthem “Bang It.” The follow-up to June’s Dangerous tape and August’s Soul Snatcher with DJ Gutta Butta, Different arrives on November 30th via EMPIRE.

Born and raised in Vallejo, CA, home to hip-hop innovators E-40 and Mac Dre, Benny endured a troubled childhood, facing evictions and unreliable utilities in his homes. After getting into too much trouble as a high school student, Benny’s mother kicked him out of his house, causing Benny to spend months living in his car. Determined to prove to his family that he could make something of himself, Benny started making music, dropping in on high school talent shows and gathering his friends to make energetic music videos, like the Biggie-sampling “All A Dream,” which quickly racked up millions of views. Now, Benny is a staple of the Northern California rap scene, collaborating with regional heavy-hitters like OMB Peezy andPrezi and earning the support of local hip-hop tastemaker The Thizzler. With the upcoming release of Different, Benny looks to continue his upward trajectory, breaking out of his region and becoming a household name.
