Video: Baby Smoove – “Young Rich Bastards” ft. NSC
The Endlessly Quotable Detroit Rapper Sips and Smokes with His Homies in the Wake of His I’m Still Perfect Album
Critical Praise:
“He knows that any combination of words he strings together automatically turns into poetry” – Pitchfork
“Baby Smoove loves a lot of things: shopping, smoking, and talking about the cost of what he bought and smoked. He also happens to be really good at rapping…that unbothered personality is part of Baby Smoove’s appeal, in addition to an ear for piano melodies and a natural prowess for lyrics made for Instagram captions.” – Pitchfork
“He mumbles each flex, barely getting the words before laughing at his own audacity.” – The FADER
The Video:
The game’s most consistent purveyor of blasé rich life bars, Baby Smoove moves with complete and utter confidence. Coming through with another laid-back Detroit anthem, Smoove shares “Young Rich Bastards,” his new collaboration with D-Town crew NSC. Produced by Rocaine, who lends a syrup-ified swing to the proceedings, “Young Rich Bastards” is a slinky slapper, packed with memorable flexes from Smoove and the other emcees: “Imma killa and a hustla, sell it to you, take it back/Got my momma not one, but two Chanel bags,” sighs Smoove. In the video, directed by JuddyRemixDem, Smoove and the rest mob in Detroit, sipping syrup in a parking garage as they relax by a Rolls Royce. “Young Rich Bastards” arrives in the wake of I’m Still Perfect, Smoove’s acclaimed new mixtape.
With assistance from fellow D-Town natives like Rocaine, Topside, and Michigan Meech behind the boards, Baby veers from pep talks to put downs, effortlessly stringing together quotables atop melodramatic movie soundtrack strings (“Sleep Walkin”), 8-bit harp arpeggios (“Drank-Juice“), or hard-charging Detroit-style instrumentals (“Lonewolf“). Beneath its luxurious surface, however, I’m Still Perfect is an introspective and confessional project, as Smoove’s dead-eyed delivery bears the scars of intense trauma and loss. The album received praise by The FADER, who called it “one of my favorite projects of the year so far,” and by Pitchfork, who named I’m Still Perfect the Detroit Mixtape of the Week. Featuring singles like “Dirty Faygo,” “Palm Angels,” and “Losing My Mind Pt. 2,” I’m Still Perfect is available everywhere.
His first full-length project of 2020, I’m Still Perfect features previously released tracks “Dirty Faygo” and “Palm Angels.” The new project follows a busy 2019, which saw the rapper releasing new projects, Baby, Flawless, Mr.Perfect, and Purple Heart, each highlighting a different aspect of his personality, and dropping his underground hit “Akorn” (over 5 million YouTube views and 2 million streams on Spotify). Praised in publications like Pitchfork and The FADER, Baby Smoove is only getting started on his mission to convince the world of his perfection.
