Critical Praise:
“A self-proclaimed title like ‘Princess of Compton’ is a heady one, but Azjah (pronounced Asia) is out to validate it.” – Complex
“Azjah’s voice has a lilt to it, wavy and embracing but absolutely killer when she’s coming for someone’s head.” – Passion Of The Weiss
“It’s been a quarter-century since L.A. had a female rap star. Azjah is about to change that.” – The LAnd
“One thing that separates this artist from the rest of the other rising rappers, is her unique voice and conscious tongue. Whether she is flowing about having a good time, or talking about the Compton culture, it is clear that she has what it takes to make it big time in the music industry” – RESPECT MAG
The Video:
Winning fans with her unique perspective on L.A street rap, Compton’s Azjah has a bright future. Baring her soul in a romantic new video, Azjah shares the new clip for “Soul Ties.” Produced by Bizness Boi (6LACK, PartyNextDoor), “Soul Ties” mixes tender, new age keys and woodwinds with crisp percussion, creating a swirling pocket for Azjah to melodically explore the conflict between her hardened street persona and her inner romantic. In the video, directed by Azjah herself, the “Soul Ties” video tells a sweetly romantic story of Azjah and her latest girlfriend, starting with a meet-cute at a Compton gas station (Azjah pulling up in her Maserati), and progressing to intimate nights at the club and the crib.
“Soul Ties” is the latest single from 1:03 AM, Azjah’s upcoming project. The new project is carried by Azjah’s innate sense of melody and expressive emotion–her songs read like diary entries, telling self-contained narratives and radiating toughness and vulnerability in equal measure. Exploring all aspects of her love life, the project serves up R&B-inflected slow jams like “Don’t Make It Easy” as well as guitar-driven bangers like recent single “Purple Reign.” On 1:03 AM, Azjah is in her bag, serving up some of the best late night jams in L.A. rap Featuring appearances from rising star Yung Bleu and L.A. singer Mayhrenate, 1:03 AM arrives this Friday, June 25th, via EMPIRE.
Born and raised in Compton, Azjah has developed into one of the leading voices of L.A.’s bustling rap scene. She grew up in a musical family and developed eclectic tastes (she loves everyone from Maxwell to Lil Durk to James Blunt), but didn’t start pursuing music seriously until her older brother went to jail. Since then, she’s been dedicated to her craft–and her city’s tastemakers have been taking notice. She made the most noise with her 2018 single “Time For It,” which generated over 1 million streams on Spotify and recruited heavy hitters Shordie Shordie and Kalan.FrFr for the remix, and connected with Ty Dolla $ign for “That’s Facts,” which has over 2 million streams on Spotify alone. In the past year, she’s been keeping up momentum by releasing singles like “True Story“ and hopping on “Ain’t For Me,” a song by Long Beach standout $tupid Young.
With her new project, Azjah establishes herself as a distinct voice in the bustling L.A. scene.
