Critical Praise:
“A self-proclaimed title like ‘Princess of Compton’ is a heady one, but Azjah (pronounced Asia) is out to validate it.” – Complex
“Azjah’s voice has a lilt to it, wavy and embracing but absolutely killer when she’s coming for someone’s head.” – Passion Of The Weiss
“It’s been a quarter-century since L.A. had a female rap star. Azjah is about to change that.” – The LAnd
“One thing that separates this artist from the rest of the other rising rappers, is her unique voice and conscious tongue. Whether she is flowing about having a good time, or talking about the Compton culture, it is clear that she has what it takes to make it big time in the music industry” – RESPECT MAG
The Announcement:
Making waves with her easygoing and melodic flow, Compton’s Azjah is well on her way to becoming the first lady of L.A. rap. Cooking up a selection of late night jams, Azjah announces 1:03 AM, her upcoming project. Carried by her innate sense of melody and raw emotion, Azjah’s songs read like diary entries, telling self-contained narratives and radiating toughness and vulnerability in equal measure. On 1:03 AM, the “Princess of Compton” explores all aspects of her love life, serving up R&B-inflected slow jams like “Don’t Make It Easy” as well as guitar-driven bangers like recent single “Purple Reign.” Featuring appearances from rising star Yung Bleu and up-and-coming singer Mayhrenate, 1:03 AM arrives on June 25th via EMPIRE.
Along with the announcement of the project, Azjah shares “Soul Ties,” a brand new single. Produced by Bizness Boi, known for his work with 6LACK, PartyNextDoor, and more, “Soul Ties” mixes tender, new age keys and woodwinds with crisp percussion, creating a swirling pocket for Azjah to work her rhythmelodic magic. “Soul Ties” finds the artist blurring the lines between confession and seduction, exploring the conflict between her street side and her inner romantic: “You know can’t nobody do it better/I keep you laced up in Gucci or whatever/I should put my pride aside and let you in/I just have to spin the block up in the Benz.”
Born and raised in Compton, Azjah has developed into one of the leading voices of L.A.’s bustling rap scene. Shegrew up in a musical family and developed eclectic tastes (she loves everyone from Maxwell to Lil Durk to James Blunt), but didn’t start pursuing music seriously until her older brother went to jail. Since then, she’s been dedicated to her craft–and her city’s tastemakers have been taking notice. She made the most noise with her 2018 single “Time For It,” which generated over 1 million streams on Spotify and recruited heavy hitters Shordie Shordie and Kalan.FrFr for the remix (approaching 5 million views on YouTube), and connected with Ty Dolla $ign for “That’s Facts,” which has over 2 million streams on Spotify alone. In the past year, she’s been keeping up momentum by releasing singles like “True Story,” hopping on “Ain’t For Me,” a song by Long Beach standout $tupid Young, and appearing as a featured artist on Snoop Dogg’s I Wanna Thank Me album.
With 1:03 AM, Azjah is in her bag, serving up some of the best late night jams in L.A. rap. Stay tuned for much more from the rising artist in the near future.
