The Album:
Today, Souls of Mischief co-founder A-Plus and Compound 7 cohort AAGEE are proud to announce the upcoming release of their collaboration Molly’s Dirty Water. The hip-hop veterans cite their experiences partying at EDM clubs as inspiration for this experimental new project, which fuses a hip-hop attitude with the sonic vocabulary of EDM production styles. The mix of instrumental-only tracks and tracks with lyrics makes for a diverse project with glitch-hop roots. Labeling their character “Molly” as a drug reference would be an oversimplification: A-Plus says of their concept, “…some songs are more about a cool girl named Molly, others about a not so cool girl named Molly.”
While A-Plus and AAGEE are no strangers to experimentation – the Oakland, California based musicians’ last release was the Red Hot Chili Peppers-inspired release Pepper Spray – the new album Molly’s Dirty Water pushes the boundaries of hip-hop even further. A-Plus, who produced the unmistakable song “’93 til Infinity” which solidified Souls of Mischief’s place in hip hop history describes, “I was free to try different things out both lyrically and production-wise. Once again, stuff that wouldn’t fly in the Hiero paradigm. I enjoyed the freedom to experiment, because any hip-hop purist backlash I’d normally get was kind of removed from the gate, due to the experimental nature of the music and subject matter…”
Molly’s Dirty Water will be available on January 14th and is available for preorder today at Hieroglyphics Imperium: http://store.hieroglyphics.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=66_125&product_id=263
The Video:
The video for lead single “Time to Let Go“ depicts a scene at the sort of after-hours club where A-Plus and AAGEE might have frequented while developing material for Molly’s Dirty Water. The club’s atmosphere mirrors the track’s fusion of hip-hop and EDM elements: spliffs and break-dancers meet flashing lights and pounding music. As the party escalates, one unfortunate “party girl” pushes past her limits.
Please contact Michelle or Dan if interested in talking with A-Plus or AAGEE.
A-Plus and AAGEE Background:
For nearly two decades, A-Plus has been honing his skills as producer, artist, and businessman as a founding member of Hieroglyphics and Souls Of Mischief. He and AAGEE joined forces as production team Compound 7 to earn production credits on albums such as A-Plus’ My Last Good Deed and Casual‘s Smash Rockwell LP. Their concept album, Pepper Spray, which features fellow Hiero member Del The Funky Homosapien, reimagined some of the Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ most epic tracks.
Starting with their landmark debut ’93 ‘til Infinity, Oakland’s four-person rap group Souls of Mischief blazed the trail for hip hop’s evolution. Members Tajai, A-Plus, Phesto, and Opio have left their mark sonically, lyrically, and stylistically on Kanye West, Just Blaze, Big Sean, Big K.R.I.T., P. Diddy, Vampire Weekend, John Mayer, and many more who have cited them as cultural icons and influencers. Souls is also credited as having pioneered the independent label movement when they started Hieroglyphic Imperium Records in 1997 following their departure from JIVE Records, creating the infrastructure blueprint for other successful independent hip hop labels. Co-founders of the Hiero label also include emcees Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, and producer Domino.
A-Plus and AAGEE announce the January 14th release of their EDM-influenced concept album Molly’s Dirty Water via Hieroglyphics Imperium.
