The Music:

FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga brings the early ’90s to life with its deeply felt performances and high-octane soundtrack. This week, FX and 20th Century Studios continue to release original songs from the official soundtrack, delivering “Sinful Obsession,” featured in “Homecoming,” the fifth episode of the series’ first season.

While much of The Drop‘s soundtrack features hip-hop music, “Sinful Obsession” is a change of pace from the soundtrack’s brain trust of lyricist Jason “Problem” Martin and producer Larrance “Rance 1500” Dopson. Featuring powerhouse vocals from award-winning singer and actress Denée Benton and piano from 1500 or Nothin’ artist/songwriter and GRAMMY-winner Jason Taylor, “Sinful Obsession” is a piano-led ballad, a simmering statement of pure desire in 6/8 time. In her expressive alto, Benton skates atop Taylor’s bluesy piano licks, throwing caution to the wind as she embraces a love that she knows is wrong, but feels so right. Benton’s show-stopping performance provides an emotional capstone to “Homecoming,” the series’ most recent episode.

“Sinful Obsession” is only the latest musical highlight from The Drop to hit streaming services. The Drop made headlines with “LA Theme Song,” the show’s main title theme, featuring an unheard verse from the late, great Nipsey Hussle. During the season, FX and Hollywood Records released four songs by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, the acclaimed L.A. rapper, who plays aspiring rapper Artillery in the series. Recent single “Back To The Hood” features a sample of Chaka Khan’s classic “Ain’t Nobody,” and the minimalist “There Goes The Neighborhood” welcomes a guest appearance from L.A. legend Suga Free. In September, alongside the series premiere, FX released “Rydah” and “Officer Blackman,” two songs that illustrate the series’ dedication to nailing the prevailing sound and aesthetic that made the West Coast scene legendary.

In addition, musicians, cast members, and writers from The Drop discuss “Sinful Obsession” on the new episode of Behind The Beat, a short-form companion series that unpacks the music and cultural influences behind The Drop. An immersive journey into the sounds, stories, and community at the heart of the series, Behind The Beat reveals the creative process behind the show’s music, and explains how the show’s songs and stories feed off of each other. All episodes of Behind The Beat are viewable on the official YouTube account of FX Networks.

Overview:

FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga follows Snowfall characters Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John) as they fight to reinvent themselves in ’90s Los Angeles, where the fallout from the crack epidemic is fueling a new game: the rise of West Coast rap.

Wanda starts the series driven by the clear belief that West Coast rap has the power to reshape American culture. She will work to put together a ragtag group of geniuses and lead them to the realization of all their dreams. To do it, she must navigate the dangerous overlap of music and street politics, pulling in those closest to her, including her cousins Lamar Kinsey (Asante Blackk) and James Kinsey (Peyton Alex Smith), and pursuing volatile local rapper Artillery (Simmie “Buddy” Sims III), who is already in a tangle with law enforcement.

Her internship with former D-boy-turned-label-owner Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Mychal Smith) creates opportunities but also deepens tensions between Wanda and Leon, who has vowed to leave the streets for good and chase down his own atonement through his free legal clinic.

As ambition, loyalty and survival collide, how much is everyone willing to risk in order to build something lasting in a world that threatens to pull them down?

Joining the series regulars are Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Grosse, and Quincy Chad, who also returns from Snowfall.

The Drop: A Snowfall Saga features original music, written by Jason Martin, the rapper formerly known as Problem, and produced by Larrance “Rance 1500” Dopson of 1500 or Nothin’. Los Angeles native and Rapper Glasses Malone served as a cultural consultant for The Drop and its soundtrack.

Larrance “Rance 1500” Dopson, Jason “Problem” Martin, and Glasses Malone are all available for interviews to discuss the music and soundtrack of The Drop.

The series is executive produced by Malcolm Spellman, Thomas Schlamme, Dave Andron, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, Julie DeJoie and Paul Garnes. The series is produced by FX Productions and premieres on Tuesdays only on FX and Hulu.
