The Rundown:
Los Angeles, CA – Over the past 25 years, dublab has grown from one of the first internet radio station to the beating heart of Los Angeles’s experimental music community, connecting artists and fans from all genres and medium under the banner of free creative expression. On Saturday, September 28th, dublab celebrated its 25th Anniversary, hosting a special event that brought together artists and fans of all ages for a night of dancing and discovery.
Hosted at Zebulon, in L.A.’s Frogtown, dublab’s 25th Anniversary celebration featured dozens of DJs, live performances, and visual artists, offering a multi-stage event that showcased the station’s homegrown talent. dublab divided the event into three zones–Stage, featuring live band and DJ performances; Dancefloor, hosting selectors who fostered a heady, club-like atmosphere; and Lounge, featuring a chiller atmosphere with downtempo and ambient electronic music. Among the performers were respected artists like Maral, Teebs, and The Koreatown Oddity, and guests from all corners of the L.A. music community filtered in throughout the evening. dublab’s anniversary festivities continue this week, as the community-supported radio platform announces a brand new co-branded merch collection created in collaboration with Carhartt WIP. Celebrating dublab’s 25th anniversary, the new collection blends dublab’s early internet aesthetic with Carhartt’s elevated work wear, equally suitable for indoor and outdoor exploits. The collection includes multiple crewneck and hooded sweatshirt designs, a long- and short-sleeved tee, a canvas tote bag, and a wheeled suitcase, called a “record trolley,” purpose-built for transporting vinyl. Earlier in the week, dublab hosted a live broadcast in collaboration with LAX (Los Angeles International Airport), which has been hosting “Luminaries of Light and Space,” a dynamic multimedia art installation curated by dublab, for the past two years. Transmitting live from Terminal 7 on September 25th and 26th, the program featured sets by Mark “Frosty” McNeil, one of dublab’s original founders, and Alejandro “Ale” Cohen, dublab Executive Director, as well as a multi-genre lineup of DJs, including journalist Jeff Weiss, selector/producer Darone Sassounian, multidisciplinary artist Sage Caswell, and others. As dublab turns 25, it continues to honor its history and legacy while looking towards the future, expanding its programs, deepening its commitment to the community and continuing to enrich Los Angeles and the world through its radio broadcasts, media production, events, public art projects and educational initiatives. The impact of dublab continues to grow and resonate throughout the globe, as stations like the UK’s NTS Radio and NYC’s The Lot Radio gain their own notoriety, and its quarter century celebration was a perfect way for the station veterans to celebrate their immense accomplishments, while preparing for even more to come.

About dublab
dublab was founded in Los Angeles in September 1999, by Mark “Frosty” McNeill and Jon Buck during the initial “dot-com” era and has been broadcasting ever since, setting a standard for online radio that persists to this day (current executive director Alejandro “Ale” Cohen was involved with the organization as a volunteer from the beginning, before formally joining the organization in 2007). Founded just one year after Google and two years before iTunes and the iPod debuted, the not-for-profit, listener-funded station presents over 180 radio shows, and hundreds of hours of unique programming per week, from selectors that range from prominent producers, renowned DJs, established artists, L.A. scenesters, and respected music critics and historians. The heart of dublab is that tight-knit community of artists and curators, who have turned the station into an epicenter for global experimental music.
Over the years, luminaries like Flying Lotus, Flea & John Frusciante, who performed a special set during the pandemic, and Four Tet have popped by to showcased their esoteric tastes. Over its 25 years, dublab’s footprint has expanded considerably, starting satellite locations in Japan (Tokyo), Spain (Barcelona), Germany (Cologne), and Brazil (Sao Paulo). The organization’s ambitions have expanded beyond the digital airwaves, producing art exhibits, films, events, television, and community education projects. Earlier this year, dublab unveiled Nose Music, a limited edition set of ten custom-formulated fragrances and accompanying artwork, each inspired by the spirit and essence of a classic album.
