Afro Nation Detroit: Sunday Recap
A Celebration of Afrobeats and Global Black Music & Culture, the Second Annual Afro Nation Detroit Closes With Performances From Asake, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Scorpion Kings and Many More
Critical Praise:
“…Afro Nation has the accolade of being the world’s biggest festival centered on Afrobeats music.” – Billboard
“When an international Afrobeats festival comes to one of the Blackest cities in America, history was bound to be made.” – Essence
“Detroit is Afro Nation…Afro Nation is more than just a two-day music festival. It’s even beyond a gathering of Africans, American or otherwise, descending on a city to have a good time with good vibes. It’s a mecca of unapologetic Blackness that puts the spotlight on not just music, but unity, and community.” – Detroit Metro Times
“…Afro Nation Miami had an unmistakable African essence, fusing afrobeats, amapiano, and reggae.” – Variety
“The festival promises to deliver an impressive array of today’s hottest artists from Africa and the diaspora.” – Yahoo!
THE RECAP:
Afro Nation Detroit gathers many of the world’s biggest stars for a celebration of African and Global Black music and culture. While Saturday was dedicated to showing the immense talent from Africa, Sunday zoomed out to take a more global view, presenting a diverse array of talent, but without straying too far from the motherland.
As always at Afro Nation, music from the oldest continent spent plenty of time in the spotlight. Nigeria’s Asake performed his invigorating blend of spiritual Afrobeats, playing songs from his newly released album, Lungu Boy, leading the crowd in emotional chants, and reveling in the power of music.
As the sun set, Toronto R&B star PARTYNEXTDOOR set the mood, singing his lovelorn anthems with help from a live band. Jamaica’s dancehall queen Shenseea stood up for the Caribbean, delivering an incendiary set of her thumping hits.
The Piano People stage was jumping from afternoon ’til night, headlined by Amapiano monarchs the Scorpion Kings (DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small), rising stars DBN Gogo, TxC, Komo Mphela, and local Detroit talent, Donavan Glover.
The only Afro Nation event in the United States this year, Afro Nation Detroit showed why it is becoming an institution in the city and in the U.S. scene at large. It is a festival held in the spirit of unity and celebration, bringing the diaspora together in the spirit of music, food, fashion, and more. Stay tuned for announcements about future Afro Nation events.
