The EP:
Chicago duo Two Depressed Kids (TDK) are not afraid to confront their demons head-on. Today, the genre-bending duo shares their new EP, Balloons At A Funeral, out now via 1st & 15th. The 4-track EP is filled with shout-along choruses, driving guitars, and lyrics that navigate the disappointment that accompanies the transition from hopeful adolescence to the realities of adulthood. Featuring production from the legendary Soundtrakk on three of the songs, the EP’s title is a perfect metaphor for their worldview, as they work tirelessly to find nuggets of joy in a gloomy world.
Balloons At A Funeral opens with “Electric Touch” (prod. by Soundtrakk, Jake Manhoff, Yuki Tasaka), a spritely pop rock banger that splits the difference between The Strokes and Lil Peep. The second song, “Tear It All To Pieces” (prod. by Soundtrakk) is a cathartic anthem about feeling stuck while watching peers go on to fulfill their life goals. “Not The Same,” a laid-back jam for late summer, combines crunchy chords with boom-bap drums, before it turns into a vintage pop-punk rave-up to close.
Along with the EP, TDK shares the new video for “Sadder Days,” an EP highlight. Produced by Soundtrakk and Yuki Tasaka, the song is a sad, yet optimistic ballad, as the duo express their deep feeling and desire to cure their loneliness. Directed by TDK themselves, the video is a vibrant and colorful love letter to their home city and its people, as the duo of Jake and Drew wander through Grant Park, bearing their soulsunder the iconic skyline.
Signed to 1st & 15th by Lupe Fiasco, who has brought them as openers on multiple recent tours, Two Depressed Kids have made their name in Chicago with energetic performances and sharp songwriting. Earlier this year, TDK shared “Not In Love,” a bouncy, Soundtrakk-produced single that earned coverage in HipHopDX and “Can I Do It By Myself,” an uplifting video single. Most recently, Jake and Drew reunited with Soundtrakk for “Woke Up Today” and its music video. The talented duo is currently hard at work at an upcoming EP, the follow-up to their 2022 effort Miss.Judge. With 1st & 15th behind them, TDK plans to bring their hybrid sound to the mainstream. Stay tuned for much more from TDK and 1st & 15th as 2024 moves along.
