The Video:

Jae Stephens is making waves behind her crafty songwriting, pristine vocals, and impressive versatility. Getting down to business over a minimalist instrumental, the young singer/songwriter shares “Body Favors,” her new single, which will appear on SELLOUT, her upcoming EP. “Body Favors” takes inspiration from Chicago house music, complete with a propulsive, rubbery bassline built for maxed out club speakers. Stephens struts her stuff above the bass, and the cheeky keyboards and buzzy synths that enter the mix, serving up fast-paced rhymes in a ballroom housestyle. In the chorus, Jae engages in a ping-ponging call-and-response vocal, calling to mind the heyday of the Neptunes era.

“This was the song that clicked for me sonically and thematically,” says Jae Stephens. “I was listening to it over and over in my car and was like ‘why don’t I make stuff like this more often?’ I realized that this is my sound, and everything before this was just trying to figure this out.”

“Body Favors” will appear on SELLOUT, the next EP by Jae Stephens, out later this summer. The new EP is a vibrant collection of R&B heaters, as Stephens shows her facility with all strains of her favorite genre. SELLOUT is home to recent singles like the percolating “Girls Don’t Cheat,” co-written by Chxrry22 and covered by BET and Rated R&B, and the uptempo and pristine “WET,” recognized by Elle as one of the Best Songs of April 2024, plus several yet-to-be-released gems. The beginning of a new era for Jae Stephens, SELLOUT releases on September 6th via Raedio/Def Jam.

Since emerging on the scene as a teenager, Jae Stephens has been carving out her own lane in R&B.  The Dallas native first turned heads as a teenaged R&B prodigy, gaining notice with her soul-stirring vocals and preternatural songwriting ability. While she was a high school student, Stephens built a devoted audience on Tumblr, winning 200,000 followers with her sterling covers of pop and R&B songs and her entertaining life updates. She stepped out on her own as a 19-year-old, in 2017, releasing “24K,” a single that earned praise from The FADER and garnered Jae a performance on COLORS. In 2019, Jae released f**k it, i’ll do it myself, a fully self-written and self-produced EP, home to her fan favorite single “got it like that,” and joined her friend Khalidduring his performance on Saturday Night Live. She has collaborated with kindred spirits like THEY, VanJess, Khamari, and Xavier Omar, and has racked up more than 50 million streams across her catalog. Her most recent EP, High My Name Is, came out in 2022, shifting her sound in a more alternative and personal direction.

Now signed to Raedio, the “audio everywhere” company, in partnership with Def Jam Recordings, Jae Stephens is primed to deliver on her limitless potential. Stay tuned for SELLOUT, which establishes her as one of R&B’s vital voices for 2024 and years to come.
