The Announcement:
Afro Nation gathers the best and brightest in Afrobeats and other Global Black genres to host action-packed festivals across the globe. Today, Afro Nation announces the set times for the first-ever Afro Nation Detroit, happening this weekend, August 19th and 20th, at Brewster-Douglass in the heart of the Motor City. The set times allow fans to plan their visit to the historic site, whether they’re planning to catch the stars on the Main Stage or dance the day away at the Piano People Stage, culminating in headlining performances by Burna Boy and Davido.
In recent days, Detroit rapper Dej Loaf, Nigerian singer Flavour, and French artist Franglish have all been added to the bill. These international heavy-hitters will joing an array of talented names like R&B singer Ari Lennox, Nigerian duo P-Square, ATL rapper Latto, “Players” hitmaker Coi Leray, genre-bending musician Masego, Amapiano artists like Major League Djz and DJ Maphorisa, and many more.
Expected to draw tens of thousands of attendees each day, Afro Nation Detroit 2023 will feature additional activations and events to honor Detroit’s musical contributions to the world and highlight its connection to present day American, African, and global Black culture and music. The festival offers an opportunity to celebrate Detroit’s resilience and enduring legacy while also connecting with its vibrant music and artistic communities. The festival site, Brewster-Douglass, is a historically significant housing project in Detroit that was the first federally funded housing project for African Americans in the United States. It was home to icons such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and other influential African Americans.
Today, Afro Nation hosts two “Homecoming Conversations,” featuring special guests, concerning issues important to the artist community. The first panel “Innovation In Music,” features panelists including Detroit techno icon Theo Parrish, Nigerian producer Sarz, and more, while the second panel, “There’s No ‘I’ in Team,” welcomes LVRN CEO Tunde Balogun, plus others.
With more milestones to cross and many unforgettable sets in the near future, Afro Nation is primed to shine an even brighter spotlight on some of the most exciting artists in music today.

The events unite the diaspora and deliver something culturally important to a hugely underserved audience. In 2022, 40,000 music lovers attended Afro Nation Portugal to see the biggest names in Afrobeats, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, R&B, Dancehall and Bashment, at one of the most beautiful beach locations on the planet. After finishing 2022 with Afro Nation Ghana (Dec. 29-30), Afro Nation expands even further in 2023, with Miami 2023, its first-ever festival on the continental U.S.
