Project: OMB Peezy – Humble Beginnings
The Native Southerner and Sacramento Resident Premieres a New Music Video for Album Track “Love You Back”
10.11.2017
Critical Praise for OMB Peezy:
“[OMB Peezy] is tough but melodic, with a youthfully urgent voice and production that’s indebted to Louisiana and California.” – New York Times
“Sometimes all it takes is the right look, the right voice, or even the right beat to make an artist pop. With OMB Peezy, there’s a blend of all three.” – Pigeons and Planes
“This kid from Alabama is the future of rap.” – The FADER
The Video:
A cross-regional success story with supernatural slangin’ skills, 20-year-old OMB Peezy is up next. Teaming up with Grammy-nominated producer Cardo Got Wingz (Kendrick Lamar, Jeezy, Meek Mill), Peezy shares the slap-heavy six-pack Humble Beginnings, his first ever project. Humble Beginnings is a cinematic and accomplished effort, with Peezy flashing his world-weary Southern drawl over widescreen Cardo productions, telling the story of his abrupt transition from a “kid out the mud” to a budding rap superstar: Came a long way from popping them pills/Play the wrong way and I’ll get you killed/Fuckin’ the fame, I signed a deal for them bills/Tote the paper, I show up where you live.” Boasting new single “Doin’ Bad,” a collaboration with Baton Rouge’s YoungBoy Never Broke Again, which earned a nod on Zane Lowe‘s Best Songs of the Week and Spotify‘s coveted Most Necessary playlist, Humble Beginnings is the best evidence yet of Peezy’s versatility and crossover potential. Premiered by Complex and featuring an appearance from former touring partner Yhung T.O. of SOB X RBE on the effortlessly funky, mob-influenced opener “Talk My Shit,” Humble Beginnings arrives via Sick Wid It Records/300 Entertainment.
Praised by The FADER as “the Future of Rap” and as the “New Voice of Regional Rap,” the 20-year-old Sacramento resident is a natural born spitter, with years of freestyling experience and a supernatural sense of songcraft. Born in Alabama, the 20-year-old Peezy moved to the west coast when he was 12, developing a reputation as a rap prodigy, building a following on YouTube, and gaining the respect of the new wave of Bay Area artists such as Nef The Pharaoh and legends such as E-40. In the past few months, OMB Peezy started to parlay his grassroots local fanbase into a national following, earning millions of combined streams on his singles like the Noisey-premiered “Pressure,”the Pigeons & Planes-premiered “The Hard Way,” and the virally popular hits“When I Was Down,” “Porch,” and “Lay Down,” which Pigeons & Planes listed at #14 in their halftime list of Best Songs of 2017 and found a prominent fan in Wiz Khalifa who vibed to the song in an Instagram story. In July, OMB Peezy earned a mention in the New York Times in advance of his sold out show at NYC’s Webster Hall. Last month, Peezy released Word Of Mouth, a short documentary chronicling the young rapper’s beginnings and meteoric rise. Peezy is currently a featured act on Detroit riser Tee Grizzley‘s nationwide Ain’t It A Blessing tour, with additional performances by Chicago’s Lud Foe and Detroit’s Sada Baby, ending October 30 in Detroit.
To accompany the release of Humble Beginnings, OMB Peezy shares the video for “Love You Back,” one of the album’s highlights. Flashing a sing-song, double-time flow over low-riding bass, airy synths, and Cardo’s trademark cross-stick drums, OMB Peezy ruminates on the fickle nature of success in the hood, displaying wisdom far beyond his 20 years: “You can love the hood, but it ain’t gon’ love you back.” The video finds OMB Peezy relaxing on his porch, witnessing the planning and unsubtle execution of a convenience store robbery, shaking his head at the perpetrators short-sighted pursuit of a quick buck, before one of the robbers betrays his partner-in-crime. Catch OMB Peezy at The Music Box tonight in San Diego, CA.
