The Announcement:
Effortlessly melodic rapper Ajey specializes in crafting infectious and raw tracks out of his life experiences. Honing his introspective and hooky brand of rap-n-b into a fine point, Ajey announces Met Her Off the Gram, a 15-track effort packed with memorable punchlines, focused songwriting, and relatable concepts. Born in the Bronx, raised in Brooklyn, and a current resident of Miami, Ajey thrives on his easy relatability, rhyming about his Instagram habit, and mournfully singing about a long-distance relationship on “Houston Love.” An ultra-talented everyman, Ajey won a large social following on Instagram and a devoted fanbase on SoundCloud because of his emotional honesty–fans see reflections of themselves in his songs and respond to his blunt lyrics. Distributed by EMPIRE, Met Her Off the Gram releases on September 8th.
Explains Ajey: “People have told me, ‘When I listen to your music, it’s like you’re telling me how I feel.’ This album is for anyone who has felt misunderstood or felt taken for granted, or heartbroken, as if they don’t have a voice.”
Gliding above a twitchy, skeletal trap instrumental, Ajey shares “Fuck My Ex,” his latest single off the project. Showcasing his trademark realness, “Fuck My Ex” finds Ajey straightforwardly rejecting a former lover, who broke up with him when he was struggling, but tries to reconcile after he experiences some success. Premiered by ELEVATOR, “Fuck My Ex” follows the release of previous singles like the Txmmy-produced “Selfish,” which earned over 633,000 plays on SoundCloud, and “Regret,” which garnered over 190,000 plays on the service.
“You know when you start to glow up and your ex sees the progression and then tries to get back with you? That’s this song,” explains Ajey. “Like, why are you trying to hit me up NOW? Contrary to my normal way of songwriting, I wrote the lyrics first, THEN the hook later. That’s why I sound like I’m lagging on the beat. If you listen to the ad-libs I sound so laid-back and comfortable because the meaning of the song was perfect. Yo, fuck my ex, like seriously. Everyone heard that and was like ‘what?’ but then they agreed that it’s the perfect song. And the reason why I’m eating chicken wings on the cover is because it’s a nod to my day-one fans who make jokes with me about how much I love chicken. Shout-out to them!”
