Two leaders of the drill movement that took Chicago by storm, Lil Durk and Lil Reese matured into complex and compelling artists in the years since their breakout. Returning with a pointed collection of anthemic bangers, Durk and Reese announce Supa Vultures, the duo’s first collaborative EP. Lil Durk’s confident melodicism complements Lil Reese’s gritty and understated flow, creating a compelling yin-and-yang dynamic that builds upon itself throughout the project. Distributed by EMPIRE, Supa Vultures releases on August 11th.
“We from the same street in a neighborhood on the South Side. The ‘Super Vulture’ title is a combination of us – Reese got his ‘Super Savage’ compilation and we always say we vultures,” says Lil Durk. “We don’t eat each other, we eat other people and keep everything in the family. If you’re with us we call you a vulture and you’re our brother. There’s never been structure between the older guys and the younger guys like us so we starting our own thing so we can pass down things to the younger generation. On this project, we speaking from the trenches.”
Imbuing the streetwise tough talk of drill rap with a radio-friendly ability to craft a hook, Lil Durk is one of the most popular artists to emerge from Chicago this decade. Durk earned commercial success and critical acclaim for tracks like “L’s Anthem” and “Dis Ain’t What You Want,” which earned over 31 million YouTube views and was named the 92nd best track of 2013 by Pitchfork. The success of his hit singles caught the attention of Def Jam Recordings, who released his mixtape Signed to the Streets in partnership with Durk’s label Only The Family. In 2015, Durk released his debut album Remember My Name, which debuted at #14 on the Billboard 200. Last year, he followed up Remember My Name with Lil Durk 2X, which boasted guest appearances from Future, Young Thug, Ty Dolla $ign, Dej Loaf and YoGotti, received a 7.7 rating from Pitchfork, and debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Hip-Hop/R&B charts. Most recently, Lil Durk released Love Songs For The Streets, a full-length mixtape that dropped this past February.
Emerging from the streets as a leader of the first wave of drill, Lil Reese first came to national attention as the lone featured artist on Chief Keef’s breakout hit “I Don’t Like.” The momentum from that earth-shattering hit brought much attention to Don’t Like, Reese’s debut mixtape, which was hosted by DJ Drama and featured the hit single “Us,” which received a remix featuring Rick Ross and Drake. As figureheads, along with Chief Keef, of drill’s Class of 2012, the Lil Durk and Lil Reese developed a well-worn, infectious chemistry as frequent collaborators, ranging from 2012’s Young Chop-produced “Beef” (6.4 million views on YouTube), to 2015’s “Myself.“
