Bay Area Grinder Philthy Rich Drops Gritty New Mixtape, Stunts in Three Brand New Music Videos
The Prolific East Bay Kingpin Never Stops Working, Kicks Off 2017 With a Bang
2.22.2017
Critical Praise for Philthy Rich
“With a decade-long career, ties to his region’s old guard, and a clever affection for delivery surrounded by repetitive earworm hooks, Philthy’s grown from a Mac Dre-affiliate into a venerable heavyweight of the Yay Area revival sound.” – Mass Appeal
“A veteran in the Bay Area rap scene, Philthy Rich built a reputation as the Bay Area’s Gucci Mane because of his drug-fueled, yet down-to-earth, rhymes, his prolific output, and his relationships with the best street rappers and producers.” – HipHopDX
“The Oakland native has been working hard lately and been dropping some fire music.” – XXL
“Oakland’s Philthy Rich Has Made a Shit Ton of Albums and He Has Good Reasons,” – Noisey
The Project:
A streetwise hustler with a tireless work ethic, Philthy Rich is one of the Bay Area’s most prolific and respected emcees. After dropping five projects in 2016, Philthy Rich returns with a vengeance on Seminary, a potent fusion of Bay Area street music and Southern Trap named after his neighborhood in Oakland. With guest appearances from Fetty Wap, Twista, Mozzy, Icewear Vezzo, Sauce Walka, Scotty Cain, Sosamann, Band Gang and others, as well as production from Zaytoven, London On The Track, RJ Lamont, Young Lan, and more, Seminary is a concise representation of what makes Philthy Rich great: slick punchlines, a laconic, confident flow, and numerous lyrical destructions of broke boys. As the first of many releases from Philthy Rich in 2017, Seminary does an excellent job of setting the tone and raising the bar for Philthy’s music to come.
In 2016, Philthy Rich made a splash in the rap game by releasing five full-length projects. The first project, Real N*ggas Back In $tyle, boasted a high profile guestlist, including IAMSU! on the streaming hit “Make a Living,” and caused HipHopDX to describe Philthy as “the Bay Area’s Gucci Mane.” In June 2016, Philthy dropped SemCity Moneyman 4, a hyper-local project boasting appearances from the Bay Area’s best little-known street rappers. Philthy closed the year with the blockbuster Hood Rich 4, boasting high profile guest appearances from Soulja Boy, Young Dolph, B.o.B, G Herbo, and others, further cementing Philthy’s connection with the nationwide street music scene. Philthy also released two collaborative full-lengths, including the gritty Political Ties, made with his protege Mozzy, and American Greed, in which Philthy chops it up with MMG signee Yowda for 12 no-nonsense street tracks.
To mark the release of his project, Philthy Rich dropped three luxurious videos for highlights from Seminary. On “S63,” produced by Zaytoven, Philthy lounges in the titular Mercedes, rocking pounds of jewelry and contemplating his path to greatness. Philthy stuns in front of a fleet of all-white foreign cars on “Another One,” counting cash as he fuels up at a gas station. Recruiting Baton Rouge firebrand Scotty Cain to the West Coast to haunt bandos and sip lean, “Run Up The Racks” finds the two emcees stunting in Seminary with a brand new Maserati. Look for Philthy’s extensive collection of foreign cars to appear in several more videos throughout the year.
