Song: Ralo – “Showers in the Dark”
The Atlanta Emcee and #Famerican Head Honcho Shines a Spotlight on a Highlight from Diary of the Streets II
10.14.2016
The Song:
Equal parts aggressive and reflective, helium-voiced emcee Ralo brings us a cerebral yet energetic brand of Atlanta street music. Revisiting a standout track from August’s Diary of the Streets II, Ralo releases “Shadows in the Dark,” a confessional rumination with melodic flow and dramatic trap production. Though Ralo spent many of his formative years in and out of prison, he worked hard to get his life together. “Showers in the Dark” is an affecting portrayal of Ralo’s daily struggle to stay out of the sway of the streets. “When they do that dirty shit to you,” Ralo says on the song’s intro, “You go in the shower and wash that shit out.”
In August 2016, Ralo released the Birdman-hosted Diary of the Streets II, an accomplished album stocked with trap bangers with a strong melodic element and personal and introspective lyrics. A well-respected figure in Atlanta’s streets, Ralo recruited several high profile guest rappers for popular summer singles, including the Future-featuring, Southside-produced banger “My Brothers,” which Noiseypremiered alongside a Q&A, “Survivor,” a solemn video single featuring Young Scooter, the heartfelt Shy Glizzy-featuring “Dear Your Honor,” and the Complex-premiered “Flexing on Purpose,” a monstrous, lurching turn-up banger featuring Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, and 21 Savage. Though that level of star power would dwarf a lesser artist, Ralo rises to the occasion, shining with his trademark charisma. The founder of a gang turned community organization and movement called “Famerican,” Ralo’s main goal is to make the rap game more positive and civil. “I want to have a good influence on the community and raise some awareness,” explains Ralo. “I want us to stop fighting against each other”
