To be an entertainer in an industry where the shelf life of a hip-hop artist is estimated not to exceed five years, it goes without saying to accomplish the unthinkable takes tenacity, determination, hustle, and above all faith. Slim Thug is the epitome of a âBossâ with a career that has spanned 15 plus years, continuing to build his legacy that will surely be regarded in the hip-hop history books.
[wpex click for full bio]Born on September 8, 1980 in Houston, Texas, Slim Thug experienced hardships and humble beginnings that would mold him into the âBossâ he was to become. Raised on the Northside of Houston, Slim learned early on that only those who worked for what they desired would reap the benefits of living a successful life. As he witnessed his mother work multiple jobs to provide for her family, Slim knew there was more to life than his surroundings, sparking his passion for music and talent as a freestyle rapper.
Because of his stature and street demeanor, âSlim Thugâ would become his rap name. At the age of 17, Slim began to perform at local high school parties. His buzz caught the attention of legendary DJ Michael â5000â Watts and landed him a spot as a featured artist on the âSwisha House 98â mixtape. With the mentoring from Watts and his own will to be self-made, Slim recognized the importance of becoming an independent artist. He eventually began distributing his own mixtapes increasing his cash flow and knack for the business side of the industry.
After amicably parting ways with Swisha House, Slim Thug started his own record label, Boss Hogg Outlawz (BHO). Teaming up with fellow Houston rapper E.S.G., they were able to bring peace between the north and the south with the collaborative album also titled âBoss Hogg Outlawzâ. Slim Thug saw the need to bring fresh faces to the forefront forming a collective of Houston rappers under BHO that helped propel the budding careers of artists such as Dre Day, J-Dawg, Killa Kyleon, and L.E.$.
The mid 2000s would finally expose Slim Thug to the world as he signed to Pharrell Williams and Interscope Records. Slimâs solo debut album âAlready Platinumâ was released in 2005. The years 2005 and 2006 proved to be the peak in Houstonâs rise in hip-hop. Slim was nominated for an MTV2 award for âStill Tippinâ with Mike Jones and Paul Wall and won an MTV VMA for âCheck On Itâ with Beyonce. Slimâs mainstream appeal officially broke barriers between hip-hop and pop when he teamed up with Gwen Stefani for the âLuxuriousâ remix.
Slim Thug released his 2nd solo album âBoss of All Bossesâ in 2009 which featured the popular singles âI Runâ and âThugâ. Slim followed up shortly after with his 3rd solo effort âThe Thug Showâ in 2010. Slim kept himself relevant consistently releasing quality music through the âServe & Collectâ (1, 2, & 3) series and mixtapes like âWelcome to Texasâ that served as the soundtrack for some of Houstonâs biggest events such as the Super Bowl and All Star Weekend.
Slim returned to his roots of being 100% independent and began to build the foundation for his Boss Life brand. As he prepared to fully launch his new business, Slim Thug maintained the attention of his loyal fans with his mixtapes âThug Thursdayâ (1 & 2) and âHoustonâ paying homage to the city that bred him. âBoss Lifeâ the album was the beginning of a new era for Slim. He expanded his brand and influence with his popular e-Cigar (Boss Life Cigars), clothing line, and becoming a mentor to the new generation of Houston artists.
Slim Thug has achieved what most would say is unattainable for someone with his background. In addition to being a successful entertainer and businessman, Slim has also managed to add author and philanthropist to his already impressive resume. As recognition for his many efforts to give back to his community, February 25, 2014 was officially named âSlim Thug Dayâ by the Mayor Annise Parker and the City of Houston.
Through his passion for Texas culture and ability to bridge the gap between the generation of musicians in Houston, Slim released his first documentary series in early 2015. Slim Thugâs career has truly withstood the test of time. From the trenches to living a fulfilled life, Slim has opened doors for others to do the same. As he continues to build his empire, Slim Thug is undoubtedly the Boss of ALL Bosses.
