Rapper Demrick has been closely mentored by three iconic acts in Cypress Hill, Kurupt, and Xzibit. Like that platinum trio of household names, the versatile, independent MC builds his music to last. 2016’s Collect Call rings to make a connection, in showcasing a new level of album-making from an artist with a story, conviction, and a palpable passion to his art.
[wpex click for full bio]Although Demrick has since become a fixture in the California scene, he is a native of Philadelphia. With a father in prison, a single mother on welfare, the biracial Demrick found his peace in Hip-Hop. He took to rapping, and formed a group in his teens. As a front man for act Tangled Thoughts, the artist known as “Young De” would eventually team with an L.A.-by way of-Philly veteran in Kurupt. Working with Tha Dogg Pound MC, Freeway and others, Demrick made a strong dent in the professional music scene early on. Even amidst the group, his commitment to craft shined through. “My hobby became my passion, and my passion became my actual career,” he declares after a decade-long tenure. During this period, Demrick (born Demerick Ferm) traded the City of Brotherly Love for the City of Angels. In L.A., the MC becomes a fast feature in B-Real’s studio. “I was going to B’s studio for about six months and he never even knew I rapped,” Dem’ recalls. “One day I got the chance to actually rap for him, and he was really impressed by me.” B-Real would extensively feature Dem’ on his Smoke N’ Mirrors solo debut, before bringing him on a world tour. “Following the tour we got right back in studio together. I ended up writing a lot of songs on the Cypress Hill album Rise Up.” Featured on second single “It Ain’t Nothin’,” Demrick would not only provide a valued pen, but make his biggest impression yet on the Top 20-charting LP. “Things really started to fall in place for me.”
Another power player, Xzibit, invited Demrick to help him in a comeback campaign during Napalm. As the case with B-Real, Dem’ wrote and performed with X, and then raised the stakes. Demrick suggested forming a group with Xzibit and B-Real. In 2013, the Serial Killers were born, murdering the mixtape scene on Halloween day, with two consecutive projects. More than just a studio creation, the high-profile trio toured extensively. During this period, Demrick would also grace the stages of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Lollapalooza, and Rock The Bells.
Ever the builder, Demrick used momentum to step out on his own. After multiple groups and key relationships, 2015 saw the MC’s solo debut in Losing Focus on Madchild’s Battle Axe Records. Working with peers such as Logic, Dizzy Wright, and producer Scoop Deville, Demrick showed that while he earned veteran respect, he could also be a valedictorian of the new school. As he’d done for others, Dem’ branded grabbing melody to complement his sharp verses.
Fresh off of The Incredible World Tour with Logic and Dizzy, Demrick’s forthcoming 10-track Collect Call features fellow Cali mainstays Casey Veggies and Lil Debbie. “I really represent the theory that ‘anything is possible.’ This is my best and most honest work to date,” he says. Quality and consistency has been Demrick’s path to making a name for himself. He has learned from the legends, and helped them reach the masses in the 2010s. Now, it is time to tell his story, showcase his songwriting ability, and make that enduring connection on a Collect Call.
