The Song:
“I know none of my peers can rap better” proclaims Detroit rapper MAHD on his latest loose single, “Rap Better.” “I want to show that good rap and music can trump what’s popular right now,” MAHD tells The Smoking Section in their premiere post. The song is a blistering track that demonstrates MAHD’s propensity for sharp rhymes and a no-nonsense attitude when it comes to lyrically disarming opponents as he addresses Eminem‘s “Detroit Vs Everybody” single and remix. “I know I can out-rap everyone on that remix, but I have more work to do for everyone else to realize it,” states MAHD. The Motor City MC is out for war, rapping over a beat that sounds as unforgiving as a Midwest winter.
“Rap Better” is more than just a song; it is the sound of MAHD lyrically shadow boxing. Crunchy percussion and wintery chimes provide the backdrop as MAHD spews flamboyant lyrics that support his bold assertion. Lines like “I’m rap genius, but I don’t pen my lyrics/ And all you n*ggas wasting your time with garbage rhymes should be offended when you hear this/ I wasn’t made in a minute but I got the juice/ And I don’t say it just to say it, boy I got the proof/A lot of y’all should hang it up and I got the noose,” hit hard and fast.
In a genre where personal aesthetic means more than the rhymes, MAHD brings hip-hop back to its core. “Truthfully, he could rap circles around half the artists involved in the original and the official remix,” stated 2DopeBoyz of MAHD in reference to the “Detroit Vs. Everybody” record, while speaking on MAHD’s single “Out,” HipHopWired stated that MAHD “[echoes] the Motor City’s blue collar roots mixed with a millennial sentiment.” MAHD is fully warmed up with the release of “Rap Better.” His upcoming album 13, is shaping up to be a lyrical tour de force from one of Detroit’s most innovative voices.
