The Remix:
One of the year’s most acclaimed producers, DJ Mustard, surprised fans over the weekend by dropping his remix of songwriter/rapper Bobby Brackins‘ hit single, “Hot Box.” Brackins and Mustard’s history dates back several years, as Mustard DJed for the Young and Hung…over Tour in 2010, which spanned the West Coast and was co-headlined by Bobby Brackins and YG, with Ty Dolla $ign as an opener and documented on film by Kreayshawn. “Mustard has always been a dope DJ,” says Bobby Brackins, “he knows what’s gonna work in the club, that’s why he was able to make such a good transition to producing.”
The “Hot Box” remix by Mustard adds a verse from Seattle rapper Choice and additional vocals from Terrace Martin on the chorus. This unexpected release gave the original single, which features G-Eazy and Mila J, a boost to #2 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists Chart. “Hot Box” illustrates Bobby Brackins’ tenacity for songwriting and ability to cross seamlessly into the pop rap world while still maintaining his East Oakland roots. Earlier this month, Billboard premiered the video, which follows Bobby romping around an intimate house party with Mila J and a handful of her closest friends. The song, which was produced by RedWine and featured by LA’s Power 106 as a Song of the Week, has already surpassed 1.7M plays on SoundCloud and has The FADER calling it “a perfect weekender,” and The Smoking Section claiming it has “such an addictive bounce, repeat listens happen without intention.”
Bobby Brackins’ songwriting credit for Chris Brown‘s platinum hit “Loyal,” recently earned him a BMI Award. With over 25 million YouTube plays, and international radio spins to his credit, the established soloist has written for and collaborated with a litany of artists including Tinashe (for “2 On“), Iamsu!, Trey Songz, Jeremih, and Zendaya. When reflecting on his incredible career Bobby Brackins states, “People are seeing my name more and more, and they’re giving me a little more credit. I’m excited about dropping my own music and giving people the awareness that I’ve helped mold the new West Coast sound.”
