With a smooth style and a jovial demeanor, rapper C-Money is easy to get along with. As he tells it, his September debut EP, Just 4 You, escapes life’s stresses. “I took the point in time I’m at in my life right now and put it in the music,” he says, spending at least two nights a week in the club due to his rigorous performance schedule. With his own life on the go, “It’s more of a turn-up EP, something you can feel good about.” The EP is a bigger-than-life listen for life’s bigger nights.
However, looking back at his childhood in the complicated streets of Oakland, California, C-Money fancies himself a survivor of consequences that were not always so pleasant. “Oakland is more bad than good, if you want my honest opinion. It’s more about what you want to focus on,” he reveals. “I could have done wrong, as there were plenty of options for me to do so. Instead, I’m doing this. Music saved my life.” Whereas his mom was called to the police station on more than one occasion, she now sees his artistry and creativity on TV, thanks to 106 & Park airing his single with Iamsu!, “Play That.” The video single, which C-Money considers his finest work, has cemented the early twenty-something as one of the Bay Area’s next sensations.
[wpex click for full bio]Part of what makes C’s music stand apart is his careful balance of lyricism and style. “I have an East Coast flare with a West Coast style,” he describes, citing Wu-Tang Clan and Scarface as primary songwriting influences. “With the punchlines, a lot of artists are just gonna be limited to that. I’m a melodic artist, who rides that beat—so I get both of those. Plus, my sound is catchy.” Like many Bay Area rappers are known for, C-Money’s slapping beats fit the strip club, but between his own catchy choruses, he stuffs the bars with honesty, wisdom, and life—unlike many of today’s rappers—things he’s actually lived.
Rap was never on C-Money’s mind until he realized that he had more than just a knack for it. In high school, the longtime writer tried his hand at reworking Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up,” and shocked everybody, including himself. “From there, it was just a spark,” he says, strongly pursuing a music career since 2006. Now recognized on his local soil and working with rap’s premiere sensations, C-Money says the uphill battle of a career in music is leveling off with the recent success.
A keystone in C-Money’s shift will be Just 4 You. The eight-song power-packed EP is aimed at Money’s fanbase – a growing crowd of enthusiasts who have led to the artist steadily booking shows, and releasing well-received material. “The people took over, they wanted more.” The album features a who’s who of legendary and Bay Area rappers including Too $hort and Kool John of The Heartbreak Gang. Single “We Say” is inspired by The Bay’s regional slang, while “3 Point Stance” cleverly celebrates the female form. With multiple videos, including “Corner Music” and playfully bouncy “Play That” with Iamsu! garnering six figure YouTube views each, respectively, the carefree EP is the next building block for a lasting career.
Reflecting on his stake in the music scene, and his place in life, C-Money has great reason to make upbeat records for the party. “In Oakland, you get presented with a lot of choices early in life. You can make the wrong choice, or the right choice, or not be in it at all.” Embracing the journey and not just the end goal, C-Money is avoiding the wrong choices and reaping the benefits of the right ones. Driven to simply keep his mother’s faith and support, the artist is leading his devoted fan-base to a brighter path, with a style and a smile all his own.
