Red Bull Music Academy Graduates, Niko Javan and Sudie, Team Up to Release Spaced-Out Instrumental, “Affection”

Critical Praise for Sudie:
“If the work under her belt is any indicator, a staggering talent like Sudie’s could very well be mentioned one day in the same breath as some of North Texas’ most notable women in music.” – Dallas Observer News
“‘Heart Attack’ is the first taste of the 22-year-old’s sound that combines pop sensibilities with classical training and a dash of experimental DIYism.” – Indie Shuffle
“Her style fuses the ache of Jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday with the same eccentricity reminiscent of European artists Björk and Karin Dreijer Andersson.” – Saint Heron
“Sudie has been on my radar for some time now, and from the looks of things she’s garnering compliments from others as well with each drop.” – Artistic Manifesto
The Song:
Coming off her recent Dallas Observer cover story, Future RnB artist Sudie has been making waves in the electronic pop world. Describing her sound as, “something jazzy meets kind of crazy… if Bjork had arranged something for Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday to sing over,” the uniquely creative soul is carving her own lane within the music word. The daughter of a pilot, Sudie has lived all over the world: as a cultural nomad, she’s absorbed vastly different cultural references and infused them into her music.
Following the release of her latest singles, “Heartattack” and “Spill,” Sudie teams up with electronic producer and visual artist Niko Javan for his latest spaced-out, bass-heavy release, “Affection.” The two musicians were chosen by Red Bull Music Academy to attend their esteemed Bass Camp at Bonnaroo this year, where 20 selected musicians attended lectures, workshops, and studio sessions taught by local and international creative pioneers. On the creation of the track Sudie reflects on the spontaneity between the two musicians, “I literally walked into the studio where Niko was working and asked if he wanted vocals. He said ‘sure!’ We grabbed the mic and I recorded everything in about 10 minutes and bam! There it was.”
The new single is the latest offering from Javan since his Dream Boat EP dropped last month and showcases the up-and-coming artist developing and refining his sound. The instrumental track opens with reverb-soaked hand claps, bass and ambient synth chords before including Sudie’s sultry, smooth, modulated vocals with a flurry of double timed hi-hats and percussion, turning the release into an subtle, Flying Lotus-esque, bouquet of sounds. On the title and philosophy of the recording Sudie explains, “Niko emailed me when he decided he was going to release the project with the artwork and title. He said it corresponded with his affection towards music, which obviously I have as well. As far as what affection means to me at this moment, I’m a pretty open person, but there are certain parts of me I definitely keep to myself. As of right now, I’m in a committed relationship with music, and I don’t cheat on my partners.”
Sudie’s self-titled EP will be released on August 26th via Black Milk’s Computer Ugly record label.

Sudie Background:
Merging classical training with a unique DIY recording process, Sudie is an artist who’s truly forging her own territory. The 22-year-old singer, songwriter and musician, describes her sound as “something jazzy meets kind of crazy… if Bjork had arranged something for Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday to sing over.” It’s a sound she’s crafted all by herself, utilizing a pair of keyboards, a cheap microphone and a MacBook inside the confines of her tiny bathroom in Dallas, Texas, that’s taken her to Dubai and back. The result of that unusual process is a distinctive but accessible musical style, which fuses confessional, personal lyrics with influences from across the musical spectrum. Sudie will release her debut self-titled EP on August 26th via Black Milk’s Computer Ugly record label.
