Chicago, Illinois has hip-hopās spotlight for 2014. From a global superstar like Kanye West to emerging talents like Chance The Rapper, the crossroads between the East and the West has a colorful youth movement, with new approaches to music-making. That is especially true of Noelz Vedere, a 24 year-old hip-hop artist from the rarely chronicled Northside of the city. āI literally have friends who own houses in the hundreds of thousands, and I have friends who are below the poverty line,ā he explains, of his musicās place. āMe being in the middle, it exposes me to so many aspects of life. I can relate to what Chief Keef is saying, what Chance is talking about, and what Rockie Fresh is creating. Thereās so much beauty in Chicago right now.ā
[wpex click for full bio]The Windy Cityās complexity plays well against Noelzā upcoming studio debut, Bittersweet Glory. The album, featuring Freddie Gibbs and The Cool Kidsā Sir Michael Rocks, is heavy on both inspiration and aspiration. āMy first project (Popular Kid) came out and I got a lot of local recognition, but at the same time it wasnāt where I wanted to be. There are still a lot of gatekeepers and doors with keys Iām trying to find. So I feel that Iām blossoming into my glory, but itās still a bittersweet feeling.ā In 2011, Noelz burst onto the scene in a way that was even shocking to him. A song he recorded with would-be Maybach Music Group artist Rockie Fresh and Kids These Days front-man Vic Mensa mysteriously leaked to the web, with sites large and small showing āKing Meā to the court. āI had never gotten so much exposure in my life,ā Noelz admits, as he rushed to feed the masses a body of work. Popular Kid, a reference to the overnight exposure, dropped quickly after. Vedere now says the hasty process made him adopt a slower, refined approach to his sophomore release.
The songs that make Bittersweet Glory were written and tirelessly revised over extended months. āCensored Loveā is a first-person account of the complexities of relationships. As an artist who exclusively writes from experience, Noelz used real names, then cleverly edited them for privacy, allowing the songs to be both authentic and innovative. On āOut Of Focus,ā Vedere meets another local, Gary, Indianaās Freddie Gibbs, and they both pay tribute to the regionās chopping tradition with machine gun deliveries on a hazy beat. āIām not on the type of stuff Gibbs is on, and heās not on what Iām on, but we fed off each other, to see both sides of the story,ā says Noelz, who carefully pens even his most lyrical verses to silence. The album was made with German producer Alex Isaak, who Noelz says, has āGot to be the most slept-on producer in the world.ā Chord progressions, instrumentation and even vocals from āAmerican Idolā contestant Kiara Lanier make the sounds as unique as the message. In many places, Noelz displays his own double-threat singing talents. From the jarring opening cut of āPromise Landā to what Noelz considers his most open songwriting on āFallen Soldier,ā this is a cohesive project made of songs their maker claims he treated like mini albums. āI think people hearing the whole album, the whole voice, the whole journey, it will make them want to finish it and play it again,ā he says.
As Chicago shines brilliantly, Noelz Vedere hopes to fill a void in the soundscape. In the city where the particular bus or train you take home can seemingly say so much, he hopes to say much more, āI want to be the first rapper from Uptown.ā
