The Mixtape:
Today HotNewHipHop premiered the highly anticipated new mixtape, The Golden Age, from Funk Volume rapper Dizzy Wright. The 22-track tape features an impressive roster of guest rappers and producers, including Funk Volume family members Hopsin, Jarren Benton, SwizZz, and DJ Hoppa, as well as Joey Bada$$, Wyclef, Logic, Kirk Knight, Tory Lanez, Honey Cocaine, Kid Ink, SupaHotBeats, Cardo, AF Supreme, and many more. The mixtape comes on the heels of an incredibly successful year that saw Dizzy named as one of XXL Magazine‘s Freshmen Class of 2013, and performing nonstop doing tours and festival dates around the country and abroad.
The mixtape draws inspiration from the storytelling element of the 90’s, an era to which the title of the tape refers. “I wanted to bring back the 90s,” says Dizzy, “I feel like people appreciated music a little more in the past. In 2013 our flow should be developed and mixed with substance. We should be talking about something, not wasting any bars. The most important thing is substance.” Some of this substantive content comes directly from Dizzy’s notorious “smoked-out” conversations with fans and friends around him but sometimes he simply lets the mood and feel of a beat draw out subject matter. His artistic process is continually evolving and growing.
Dizzy also confidently asserts that he and his team have raised the bar across all aspects of his new material. “The production is better [on The Golden Age],” he says, “The team of people around me have grown. The producers have learned from what we’ve done before and they’ve stepped it up. That puts me on a level to just talk that shit.” There are several messages Dizzy hopes to communicate with the new mixtape but overall themes of growth, self-acceptance ,and positivity abound on tracks like “Killem With Kindness,” “We Turned Out Alright” featuring Wyclef, and “World Peace.”
“It’s important to be you, to talk about the shit you know about, whatever that is,” he says, “People should grow to be something better, not just an image. You are teaching other people. I believe in being a man and wanting to be better.” Ultimately Dizzy believes in the evolution of hip-hop in general, and he aims to be a part of a new era that pushes the genre forward while maintaining reverence for what has come before. ” ‘New History’ is the last track on the tape, and I feel like that’s what this all is,” he says, “With Funk Volume, everything that we’re doing, everything that we’re creating. It’s all going to be part of a new history.” Dizzy will begin The Golden Age Tour on September 7th in San Diego, CA. The tour will also feature New York rapper Emilio Rojas, and is presented by Funk Volume and HotNewHipHop and sponsored by Gig It.

Dizzy Wright Background:
Not many 21-year old rappers can say that they’ve been rapping for over a decade. Las Vegas, Nevada, Rapper Dizzy Wright began rapping at just 8 years old, in the group “DaFuture” with his brother and very close friend; his mother wrote his raps at the time. Dizzy broke through when he was discovered at the Sheikh Music “Rip the Mic” competition in 2010 and signed onto Funk Volume a few months later. In April 2012, Dizzy released his first Funk Volume album, SmokeOut Conversations, peaking at #2 on the iTunes Hip-Hop charts. He followed it up with a free mixtape, Free SmokeOut Conversations, which has been downloaded over 200,000 times, and helped propel Dizzy to his own national 30-city tour. In December 2012, Dizzy went on to release the first of four EPs, The First Agreement, which reached as high as #2 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart. In March of 2013, Dizzy gathered enough votes to be selected as the “People’s Choice” member of the XXL Freshman Class of 2013. Dizzy is showing no signs of slowing down, preparing a new mixtape The Golden Age, which will be released on August 19th, as well as The Golden Age Tour, which will kick off September 7th in San Diego, California.
Funk Volume Background:
Funk Volume is a record label, marketing and production company founded to give hip hop artists a home to freely express themselves without feeling controlled or pressured by any other outside forces. Currently home to Hopsin, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton and DJ Hoppa, Funk Volume’s plan is to represent only the sickest, most talented, and most creative artists that we can find. The label’s objective is to produce music that it feel competes with any other artists or labels in the industry. Funk Volume is not a “movement”, not a “gang”, not a “squad.” Funk Volume is a commitment – to protect the integrity of the music and conduct our business properly. It is a commitment to hip-hop, to its fans, and to each other.
