“Wara recalls the 1990s of Wu-Tang Clan and the early 2000s of Pharrell Williams’s Neptunes and N.E.R.D.” – The New York Times
The Video:
“Wara recalls the 1990s of Wu-Tang Clan and the early 2000s of Pharrell Williams‘ Neptunes and N.E.R.D.,” said the New York Times, as they included rapper/producer Wara From the NBHD‘s debut album, Kidnapped, in a recent Sunday playlist. One of the album’s stand-out singles, “Raw,” saw a top 15 placement on Billboard’s Emerging Artists Chart. Featuring a guest verse from Fool’s Gold artist GrandeMarshall, the track rides out out like a late 90’s hustler anthem with its menacing, drum-heavy production. “The beat makes you feel like something sneaky is going on, some criminal activity,” Wara tells Complex in their premiere of the song’s accompanying video. Filmed in the North Bronx, it plays out like a scene from Grand Theft Auto, opening with Wara and friends breaking into a BMW before flaunting while hanging out the passenger window while cruising away. The storyboard is a lead-in a follow-up video, “Slangin.” As Wara explains it, “’Raw’ shows what happens the night before, while ‘Slangin’ will show what transpires the next day.”
Also this week, Pigeons & Planes shared an interview with Wara From the NBHD, in which he announced the title of and spoke about his next project, If Guns Could Speak. “I’m not here to make anyone comfortable or to please people,” says the Atlanta via Brooklyn artist. In a previous interview with XXL, Wara boldly claims, “My main goal in hip-hop is to bring back the art form; I’m going to be the biggest rapper/producer of my time.” Kidnapped is available on iTunes as well as an illustrated version of the project you can check out here.

The Background:
Wara From the NBHD might be ATL’s next rising star. The Brooklyn born, Atlanta-based rapper serves as an embodiment of both of the areas he grew up in. An artist with a unique ability to blend both cultures seamlessly with striking lyricism and impressive production. This sentiment is highlighted with Wara’s latest release The Ill Street Blues a mix tape garnering critical praise from notable outlets such as The Fader, Complex and XXL. The project portrays a dichotomy of the good and bad Wara has experienced in his life, notably personified by his son sitting next to a gun on the mix tapes cover. His new release, Kidnapped, is a concept album produced entirely by himself.
