“RJ has built a huge regional following in the West Coast, perfecting his hard uncompromising Cali street sound on this year’s OMMIO 3. – HotNewHipHop

RJ looks like the next one up in the wild, wild West. Pay attention.” – XXL

The Video:

RJ’s aggressive lyricism, facility with rhythmelodic hooks, and a knack for selecting danceable beats have won him a massive following and earned him plenty of radio airplay on the West Coast. Celebrating his celebrity status and his stature in his home city, RJ shares Mr. LA, his first official studio album and the first release by 400 Summers, the new joint venture between YG‘s 4 Hunnid Records and DJ Mustard‘s 10 Summers. Boasting five new beats from DJ Mustard himself, along with production from Mike WiLL Made It, Larry Jay, Mitch, Authentic, and Swish, Mr. LA affirms RJ’s role in popularizing and perfecting many of L.A.’s go-to rap modes of the past half-decade. Featuring appearances from YG, Quavo, Schoolboy Q, Ty Dolla $ign, Blac Youngsta, and Earl Swavey, Mr. LA is a trunk-rattling, club-busting collection of tracks, packed front-to-back with brilliant, sing-song bars.

The follow-up to RJ’s popular OMMIO series of mixtapes, Mr. LA is a cinematic collection of party anthems and street tales. The new album features the brutal bounce of Brackin‘,” the album’s lead single, which Pitchfork praised as “L.A. rap at its finest” and Spotify placed on its Most Necessary playlist. Last week, The FADER premiered the video for “Brackin,” which depicts a feverish, violent day in RJ’s life. In addition to “Brackin’,” Mr. LA boasts a litany of diverse highlights, including the Schoolboy Q-featuring “Gin & Juice” tribute “Hennebeeto,” the Mike WiLL produced, Quavo-featuring, auto-tuned trap banger “Blindfold,” and the supremely funky “Left and Right Side.” Born in Los Angeles but with deep roots in Atlanta, RJ is comfortable with many modes of street rap. In 2013, RJ linked up with DJ Mustard, who liked his style and recruited him to join the producer’s 10 Summers crew. A favorite of L.A.’s Power 106 hip-hop station, RJ heated up the airwaves with hits like “Get Rich,” his collaboration with fellow 10 Summers rapper Choice and HBK’s Iamsu!, last year’s “Flex,” which garnered over 4 million views on YouTube, and “Ride Wit Me,” featuring YG, which has over 4 million streams on Spotify. Most recently prior to Mr. LA, RJ appeared on “Get Out Yo Feelins,” a highlight from YG’s Red Friday mixtape. Mr. LA is available to purchase and stream right now at your favorite online music store.

The Background:

Firmly rooted in the Compton community, RJ is intimately familiar with the hustle. Born and raised in South Central, RJ’s father was a businessman with ties to the Westside Pirus and his grandfather a bootlegger, exposing a young RJ to the grind early on. At the age of nine, RJ began channeling his surroundings into raps after his mother put him on to Warren G and Nate Dogg. Moving to Atlanta post-high school, RJ became deeply embedded in the city’s trap culture. Upon his return to Los Angeles in 2013, RJ caught the attention of DJ Mustard, receiving an invitation to join his 10 Summers crew. RJ appeared on several tracks on DJ Mustard’s 10 Summers mixtape series and launched his solo career with the OMMIO (On My Mama I’m On) mixtape series, garnering critical acclaim from the FADER, LA Weekly, XXL, and more. Collaborating with the likes of The Game, Nipsey Hussle, Jeezy, and Ty Dolla $ign, RJ has painted name across the rap game. With his upcoming project Mr. LA releasing May 26th, RJ is making moves to place himself in the ranks of Compton’s finest.
